Dove banding is in full swing in MS. Maybe Scott Baker can enlighten us with the details.
Here's one I banded this morning. A big male with fat legs.

Rob, could you tell us what parts of the state are banding? Is there a site to see the reported band data?

The males have a large iridescent (sp?) patch on either side of their neck and pinkish breast and bluish heads.
The females tend to have a smaller iridescent patch (not as rosy) with a more drab grey colored head and neck. The head and neck of the female would look more like the color of the wing where my thumb is.
I'm sure the "under the tail" method is more accurate, but I have a pact with the doves....I don't violate them, they don't violate me.

I think that is what keeps the natural world in order.

Wingman - how do y'all catch the doves? I've seen the blast net things to catch turkeys over bait - same thing with doves?

Yes, there are different methods of trapping the doves, some use cages with wire funnels while I just holler "FREEZE, FOOL!"
