what do you guys think would be the best all around caliber for a 16-17 female to hunt with. this female will most likely be hunting alot of flat delta land. prolly take out to a 200 yd shot. my feeling are a 7mm-08 but not sure of the knock down power at 200yds. All thoughts and experiences are welcomed

I have a 7-08 that I originally bought to let kids use, and now it is one of my most used rifles. I would not hesitate to take a shot out to 300 yds. I shoot either handload 140 gr. Barnes TSX's or 140 gr. TBBC Federal HE factory loads (I don't think these are made anymore). If you put the bullet in the boiler room, it will do it's job, I assure you.

My first deer was a muley just over 100 yards. I was shooting a BLR in .243. The 4x4 dropped where he stood. I was 12 years old. Lever actions are kinda small and lightwieght. 243 is easy ta find bullets for, and, very accurate with enough pop when it hits home

7mm-08, 243, or 6mm. any of those would do just fine, also a 25-06 would proably be good also.

I agree. I have a remington model 7 in 7mm08 it is by far most most used rifle. There are not many situations it is not perfect for. If I had to have only one rifle God forbid it would be that rifle.

That would definately put that young lady out of deer hunting for a while! This is the caliber that I shoot and (even with factory loads) this caliber is by far the most inapproprate rifle for her. The Browning micro hunter or the remmington model seven in 7mm-08 would be the ticket with a nice Leupold VX II 3-9.

I'll name all that have been said and add another in the list:

7mm-08, 223, 243, 25-06, 6mm

Depending how you want to go about doing things, you could get her like a 30-06 and hand load some lighter powder loads and as she gets older, step into standard loads. This would allow one rifle, but may be concerned about weight of the rifle for her to carry around.

22-250, 220 Swift.

We have used all of these with great success in the long range shooting capital of the world, South TX..

I shoot a 6mm and love it. Farthest I've ever shot at a deer with it was 180 yards and she dropped in her tracks, so it'll get the job done. I don't even notice the recoil.

I also shoot a 6mm but I believe that the 7mm08 is probably a better all around child or ladies rifle.

Also correct me if I am wrong but is it not illegal in Mississippi to deer hunt with a .22 caliber rifle.

I'd see what GH22 shoots at deer, he seems pretty girly to me.
