My wife got one from a lady in Booneville. She had them at half the cost of some of the ones I was looking at. Most were around $800-$1,000. She has an add in the Tupelo Daily Journal almost every day.
Those little things are a nightmare!! When she decided to get one, I bought her a book about them and it very specifically said that they are not trainable and are not very smart!! The trainable part I can vouch for....that dern dog had rather pee in the floor than outside or on her puppy pad any day. I swear I think it may be the devil in disguise!!

First, I'm ashamed to say there is a Yorkie in my house. On the other hand, I guess I got lucky because he is a very smart and cool dog. I know that most of them are "yappy", but the only time he barks is when he can see a deer in the yard. He also doesn't realize how small he is, and he'll jump right in with my labs and tug on a sock with them.......that being said, get her a lab

Do yourself a favor and get her a miniature schnauzer. They DO NOT shed!! They are smart enough that they usually train you. Great watchdog, you don't need an alarm. The only downside is they need a haircut about every 6-8 weeks. We've got one and he's pretty much maintenance free and DOES NOT shed. Oh and they're a lot cheaper! Forgot to mention I hate me a Yorkie too!! Only been around one that I liked.
Edit -- Wait better yet my wife works with the Southern Schnauzer rescue people. You could adopt her one that's already crate trained and fixed.

She wants a little dog. I told her a chihahah(sp) was out. I want her to get a low maintenance dog. I do not want to have to pay for a haircut every few weeks. She had a min doberman and it was dumb as dirt and mean as hell. Mom has a min jack russell and its a smart dog. Whatever she gets has to be small and easy to care for. BTW she leaves for college in 2 years and I know I will end up having to keep it.

Perhaps some sort of spaniel? At least they are good for something.

Well if she's leaving it at home I'd get something you'll like as well since you'll be dealing with it everyday. Last plug for the schnauzers. They are small, usually about 15-16 lbs. Other than a haircut every couple of months they have no maintenance (no shedding = no dog hair everywhere) and do not have a doggy smell about them either. Jack Russells are pretty cool dogs and smart as well. Seen several of them that I've almost brought home. For an inside dog that would probably be my second choice followed by a beagle. Min Pin's are evil little things and I wouldn't piss on a chihauhua if it was on fire. And if you don't want a dumb dog stay away from a shihtzu (sp?).
