Caught them on anything from a plain ol' crappie jig to a crankbait, to a minner. Basically anything that immitates a minnow/shad.

Make sure you use a steel leader. I've caught some on spoons before.

They are fun when the fishing is in a lull. Here are a couple os small ones a bud caught one eve. We were chunking rattle traps and stick baits.Lots os time you are snagging. But they pull like a mofo. Image

We catch them in saltwater using cut bait (mullet) and a steel leader on a Abu Garcia 7000 with a heavy duty rod.

Gar meat is great to eat. Peel the meet off and make patties with the meat.

eat it hot and its pretty good (TASTES LIKE CHICKEN) eat it cold and i reminds me of a cross between a wilson basketball and a cotton ball kinda chewy and the longer you chew it the bigger it gets......

the only way i've ever intentionally caught them was bowfishing......
