Delta State shuts down campus because of bomb threats

Classes canceled for today

Delta State University has shut down its campus in response to a series of bomb threats in several buildings – Kent Wyatt Hall, Roberts-LaForge Library and Cleveland Hall, according to a news release from the university.

Classes are canceled for the rest of the day, and students in the residence halls should report any suspicious packages or activity to the Delta State Police Department at (662) 846-4155.

“In the shadow of the recent tragedy at another campus, we are choosing caution," said President John M. Hilpert. "We put the safety our students, faculty and staff first. We will be forthright with our information as it becomes available, and we ask for the media’s patience and support as we deal with this situation."

Walter Sillers Coliseum is available to students as a refuge. The area has been swept and is clear of any danger.

Thats F'd up, prolly dumbasses calling in threats all over the country after the vt deal. I was at dsu from 1999 to 2003, if there was ever a bomb threat during that time i cant recall it.

My daughter is a first year nursing student at DSU and was off campus at the Cleveland Hospital when all this went down. She has not been able to get back on campus to her dorm and will probably have to spend the night with some other nursing students at their house. She said they had found about a dozen bomb threat letters scattered around campus. Hope they find whoever is responsible for this.

I'm on the staff at DSU, and just got the official word that the Campus will be closed tomorrow as well. They are bringing in outside agencies to help with the sweep. Dogs and electronic sweepers and such. The students are encourage to stay off campus, but not required. Anyone wanting to know the status of the classes and search can call 662 846 4636

Yeah,, This crap os happening everywhere... I teach in central ms. There has been two bomb threats in Scott and Newton counties.... Just wanting attention I taught one of them...

Are finals going on at DSU right now? If not, I am sure they are about to start and I would not be surprised if the bomb threats and finals are connected in some way. Desperate people do desperate things.

I was there from 90-95. Heck we never conceived anything like that. To be honest, even now in this world of craziness, I would not expect it there. Then again, I would have welcomed anything to get classes cancelled.

My night class was cancelled. I hope they catch them. They have the FBI and Highway Patrol searching each building for bombs. Dorm students were asked to go home if they could. A real hassle but I know they have to cover thier butts after the VT tragedy.

Man back in High School I can remember an old boy called in a couple of threats. They marched our butts out side for about 20 monutes then back in to work. Not now...now they have to take it serious. Amazing how things have changed in 17 years.

We never did hateful stuff like this! Not in '93 at DSU, nor in the early '80's at MSU. I hope they catch these SOBs.

I agree. Bad enough anytime, but especially now in the wake of VT. I understood they found 10-12 notes referencing the threat. Somebody needs to be extermintated.

In class this morning my instructor said they had someone in custody. No name released yet but they have caught him.
