have fun. nothing against the club but the early date sucks. i think there where at least five dogs i heard of last year that broke down because it was 105 degrees. i ain't puttin my dog through that again. they do have some good grounds if it were only a little later in the year. they ran one of the finished tests on a sand bar in the river and it was fun but still to hot.
If i couldn't hunt with my dog, then i wouldn't hunt at all.

I didnt see any of them. Close as I came to seeing a dog over heat was rowdy overheated in the driveway friday afternoon when we where loading up (came back from alaska the day before and had a full coat). So my truck ran all friday afternoon and he sucked up ac... but he ran the tests and handled the heat all weekend just fine. If a dog that died the year before from respirtory trama and was sent north to escape the summer heat can come back and run in august with a full winter coat, I dont see why any healthy dog can't. Common sense is needed, but its needed from late april to end of sept around here... east arkansas deals with the heat well, namely by judges that understand tests that are approiate for big heat. but always ice on hand, and alchol to cool one off that gets too hot.
Their isnt much choice on the early date. Every weekend in the fall has something going on. Personally Im glad we start that early. This year Im planning on going to centeral la 2 weeks before east arkansas, and we just got back from a texas hunt test 2 weeks ago. common sense and condtioning will go a long way being able to run an event in hot weather. Any big dove shoot you go to will have more dogs in trouble from the heat than east arkansas hunt test will, I assure you.
If you want in a hunt test, make your own premium and send it in to the addy listed. Offical premiums can not be published until judges are approved, and a lot of times that takes a while, especially for early season tests. You wouldnt belive how many judges forget to renew their memberships or take a test... lots of times your judges report will have 5 or 6 notes of stuff you got to take care of before they are offically approved. download any premium, scratch the name off, print your dogs info on it, and make 50 copies of it... send it to every hunt test you want to go to with thier name written on top. travis (who plans on kicking some serious booty at east arkansas)

i didn't say that they overheated. there were just a few dogs that the judges told the handler to pick up to keep from getting too hot. my dog included. and also i never saw any ice in the seasoned test on saturday.
thats pretty amazing that a dead dog came back and ran fine after being sent up north all summer.
i know what you meant.

he's a pretty amazing dog. he died at the emergency vets office and then died in my kitchen 3 days later. he came back both times. It took 10 months to get him 'back'. Will never have the stamina he had before, and will never be 100% after it. But at 75%, he's still the best most have ever seen. If his career would have been over, I would have been disapointed, but ok with it. I just wanted him back. I got him back, and a grand pass and 25 more finished passes since his trama, I figger its the second time Ive been blessed to have him. travis

you ain't gotta tell me how good he is. i have seen him run. i was there when you got 1000 with him. i just figured your post on him dying would be kind of strange to people who don't know anything about what happened.

Summer Hunt Tests
I have been to Central La twice Last August and the August before. Pineville, LA is often talked about as the hottest place on earth. It's held on a millitary base with lots of pine trees. They will have 4 flights of finished, all four flights will be full as well as started and seasoned. Its a great Hunt. The judges and the hunt test committe do a great job of setting up challenging tests with the heat in mind. They usually have a double in one series of finished but a grand/master level blind.
However last year it was cooler in LA than East, AR. and the tests were a couple weeks apart. Common sense and a well conditioned dog will do fine.

How do you know how much to send? Is the premium always the same, say $50 a day in seasoned?

everyone is pretty close. some finished tests are 55, some are 60. 50 would be safe to send for seasoned. if there is a few dollars more owed, they'll let you pay it on sat morning. if you pay too much, just tell em you want it in raffle tickets on sat night.
if you make your own premium, like from word or something, mimick the order the info is on a real premium. because hunt secetaries have to input your info onto their database and doing it in the correct order is easier for them.
another advantage to printing your premoiums out is hunt secetaries dont have to read your writing!
i print out premiums for all my dogs, and send them into every club I know Im going for the season. enclose a check for the monday BEFORE the hunt. often send entires in weeks or months ahead of time, and I dont plan on tieing up my money that long. the day of the event is kinda crappy, because a lot of clubs will make a desposit the week of the hunt to help cover the checks they write on friday of the hunt. travis

I just send cashiers checks for sporting clays tournaments and stuff like that so I don't have to figure out why a bunch of regular checks have not cleared months after I sent them and forgot about it.

Ditto on everything Trav and CDwyer posted. We will have a Vet onsite for the test. He will also be doing bitch check for us each morning.
We are waiting on a judge to be able to get the official premium posted online.
A lot of folks have their dog's information pre-printed and as long as the immunization and damage waiver are signed, there shouldn't be a problem. Those are pretty standard for all hunt tests.
Entry fees will be 45.00 for Started, 50.00 for Seasoned and 60.00 for Finished.
Thanks for your interest!

Although it may be hot and humid, the club and judges are all aware of what is needed for the weekend. They've been running their test on the same weekend for several years now, and the most uncontrollable thing they've ever encountered was a combination of travis, a mud hole, and a few smelly carp. the mud and carp where controllable; travis was a different story
