I just got my first dog yesterday, yellow lab female. She is 6 weeks old, when should I start introducing her to ducks (tossing them around her)? Any responses would be greatly appreciated.
Also, is bad when you are krate training your pup, to feed her in the krate with the gate open?
new pup question

Mine is 8 weeks today and he was introduced to ducks saturday. And to answer your second question some articles I read said to feed them in the kennel occasionally. If you click on the sticky at the top of this forum you will have tons of material to read up on good luck.

I would introduce her to quail or pigeons first .......then proceed to the bigger bird - duck. Your more likely to have quicker success because a larger bird is more intimidating than a smaller one. Once the dog is confidently attacking quail and pigeon without hesitancy, I would introduce the duck ...
As far as feeding her in the kennel ......... what are you trying to accomplish with this ?? If it is to get her to "like" the kennel ??.... I guess I don't know of any reason to feed a dog in their kennel. Kennel is place to sleep/rest/ be contained. Not necessarily feed them........ Although sometimes folks like to eat in their bed, I don't prefer to have my one meal a day in my bed.......give it some thought. If you want them to kennel on command and willingly, just throw a few treats or one treat in the kennel when you get her to kennel and most times, they will go right in.

quail and pidgeons dont have the scent of a duck. in fact, this time of year quail have almost no scent, and a frozen quail never does. I keep some teal every year just for puppies. teal dont have the scent a mallard does, but they got more scent than shovelers do.
I feed my dogs in the crate to get them to like their crate. they'll be eating in a dog hole their entire life, might as well start them early. travis
