I have a buddy that has a lab. This dog is 4 years old. It comes from real good stock. both mom and dad are grand master pointing retrievers. This dog has never been obedienced trained or anything. He has been pheasant hunting and done real well, He even flushed and retrieved a dead pheasant. So the hunt is in him. My question is If I was to obedience train and make him a water dog would It be possible?

Just got my four year old back from the trainer on hand signals. I don't think you'll have any problem as long as the dog has the drive!!! Good Luck

Yes it can be trained but depends on the dog to a large degree. I would much rather start with a puppy so I can shape his development. A 4 YO dog can learn but may have already learned a lot of undesirable behaviors that must be dealt with.

Good luck,

Bill

Yeah I don't think he will have a problem. He has alot of play in him. He can get that out of his system by running with the other dogs. I believe this dog will be a great hunting dog. the dog absolutely loves the water he has a bumper thrown for him in water and he retrieved it every time. So if he can get the obedience down, the training part should be a breeze.

Yeah I know the obedience will take a long time being that he has never had any enforced. It won't be an easy task to do.

Sounds like all he needs is some time and some ORANGE bumpers .
