this past sunday morning i killed what i think is a mallard/ widgeon cross. several people have looked at it and they also say the same. ( even the taxidermist) it has the head colors of a drake widgeon, the bill and body colors of a susie, a ring around its neck and chest colors like a drake mallard, and the tail curls like a drake. i've only been hunting a couple of years.(got tired of deerhunting and probaly won't ever be serious about it again) i guess what i'm gettin to is, is this very common or is it like killing a banded bird. (rare) i haven't heard of many birds being killed like this.

About 7 years ago my buddy Eric shot a mule duck, the cross was about the same as yours. I don't remember any of the hen features.
Last year we shot a mule duck with a pintail drake and a greenhead.

I just could not resist.

A lot more rare than a banded duck.Bands are fairly common.Crosses are not!

I would venture to say what you shot is a hermaphrodite duck, i.e. a hen mallard showing male characteristics. You see it in people and other animals, such as a buck deer having teets. My buddy shot a duck a couple years ago exactly like the one you have described. I have shot a mallard/pintail cross and a mallard/gadwall cross, but yours sounds like a hermaphrodite.

Crossbreeds with mallards are not that uncommon (He won't cull anything) I have two mallard drakes/pintail cross mounted. Also have a pair of black mallard/balpate cross mounted. A lot of ducks do this. Most hunters either don't look or don't know what to look for in a cross. They also count as the lesser duck towards your limit too.
