on a duck. Buddy of mine killed this this morning, was banded and had the red cap over its top beak with a pin pushed through it holding it in place.

I didn't know how to enlarge it if anyone can do it

Were the dew claws removed on the duck? If so it more than likely a pen raised duck that was realesed for hunting. There is one of these outfits in Belzoni and if the duck is not killed after release and does not return to the pen it could get in with some wild ducks. I have a friend who raises pheasants and they put blinders on them attached to their beaks so they won't fight while in captivity. It looks similar to one of those blinders.

Pretty cool. This is not a pen-raised bird.

Most likely this bird is part of a waterfowl research project.

Nasal saddles help researchers ID specific birds without having to catch / kill the birds.

Did the nasal saddle have number / letter combination?

A true trophy for the wall.....

similar to a neck collar, a researcher can view the color and markings from "afar" for needed info.

least that's my understanding of the process, gator

I thought it was one of those "breathe right" strips that you see pro football players wearing.

Tamie scaup? That will be the day...but then again, some yank would probably pay for it. I bet if they would look really, really hard and scout a whole, whole lot they just might be able to find some scaup on some of those isolated and hard-to-find catfish ponds in the MS delta.

Congrats on the saddle, Chipper's buddy!

Nope. You've got it all wrong. The red saddle indicates that the duck is "tuna flavored" coinciding with the reddish color of tuna meat. I thought everybody knew that. :o

nice trophy for sure, Ive been spotting big flocks of dos gris, and black jacks for years looking for a nasal saddle to call in.....its a way they band divers so you can read the tag and id the bird without actually killing it like the leg bands...all I can say is Im jealous....man what a great yr for the divers....first a banded can and now a nasal......this will surely excite my man Wingman!!!!
