Anybody want to help put up some...

Postby Wingman » Tue Jan 22, 2008 9:28 pm

prothonotary warbler boxes around the Delta in the next month or two?

I was hoping for some higher water levels to be able to get most of them put out by boat, but it's looking kinda like that ain't gonna happen.

Delta Wildlife has made some boxes and I am gonna need some help getting some of them put out around area lakes/swamps here shortly.

The Prothonotary Warblers thank you from the bottom of their tiny, yellow hearts.

And for those of you thinking, "prothonowhat?", come along and learn something!

I was hoping you were going to say:

Yes, I would like to help with that. Please keep us posted here. Those are really neat little birds.

The majority of mine will probably go in the Sky Lake area. I've also got a couple dozen woodie boxes to put up in that area, so if a few of y'all want to bring a picanic basket, we could make a day of it and I'll show you the big trees as a bonus.

Dan, I just got off the phone with Mary Stevens. She said they put theirs up on conduit and use pvc guards.

After speaking with her, I think I will probably not use the boat, but will put them up in the woods near the water or along the shoreline under the canopy. She recommended a shady place near or on the water, but void of overhanging limbs where rat snakes can drop on them.

How can people get their own P Warbler boxes from Delta Wildlife, Dan? Don't y'all have bluebird and wood duck boxes, too?

when I installed the boxes all over the delta for delta wildlife, we used these sheet metal predator guards that slid over the metal poles. the metals poles resembled the ones that are used in slit fencing & they were bolted together to the desired height.

Thats a new one for me, be intersteing to see how it works.

DW sells the boxes for the cost of material to their membership:

P. Warbler box with predator gaurd $15

Bluebird box with predator gaurd $20

Wood duck box with predator gaurd $30

All boxes are made from rough cut 1" cypress.

I'm kinda intersted in the pvc gaurds, the sheet metal for the predator gaurds we use is more expensive than the bird box. We could really drop the price if a cheaper gaurd was used.

We are located in stoneville and you can reach us at 662-686-3370.
