This year's duck hunting

After hearing all the bad news about the hunting, I must report that we had some very good hunting between Christmas and New Year's day. While the mallards were few and far between where we were hunting in 4 ft. flooded rice field, we had a great time getting after the ring necks. 4 limits in 5 days with 2 to 3 people hunting. The mallards all appeared to be going to the woods, with our only concern being running out of shells. Those ringnecks are hard to hit and harder to kill. The dogs had a great work out chasing any cripples and after working on the ringnecks, the few mallards that came by looked like they were moving in slow motion.
It sounds like the hunting is pretty poor this year, but I must report we had a good time in the central delta!
Will get after them again during the last week of the season. Hopefully, the Mallards will move back in by then.

If you just want to shoot birds,I can point you towards a field near Flowood, that's loaded with blackbirds. You won't have to drive all the way to the delta.

I've shot more ringnecks this year than in all years combined..
I give them to some guy's that work for me, they seem to like them. They boil them then bake 'em.

I see we've got ONE smart one on this board. These other guys may come around in a few years, but on these mallardless years, the bills will die.

Guys I have said it before, shooting teal and ringers are more fun than popping a big ole mallard. But, if given the choice, I'll take the the mallard.

TRY THE RINGNECK DUCK. They make fine tablefare. They are generally (depending on conditions) seed eaters. A lot of people complain about eating certain ducks when MOST haven't even given them a chance....don't just judge them by the toughnest of their skin. Skin them if that bothers you.
BTW....I don't even consider merganzers, soley based on their diet.

Well, the "divemaster" got let down today. I only got one. But I tell you what, one Sunday, they were in there thick. I had three of 'em in my decoys 10 minutes prior to shooting time.
I shot 5 that day in about 30 minutes. I also managed to shoot some kind of giant duck or maybe even a goose. I'm not sure what kind of bird it was. It was much larger than a Ringneck, and it had a green colored head.

Wildfowler, I would suspect that is a greenneck.

peewee, it was probably a constipated snow goose. when they eat that special corn that DU is putting out up north - for the ducks - it stops them up, they can't "go" and it makes their heads turn green...

Wildfowler, I think you have just harvested the wiley "DUCE", a VERY rare hybrid DUCK/GOOSE. Sounds like them Greenheads are tryin to wipe out the goose population by crossbreeding them just like the are with Black Ducks. Just think....they would migrate early just like snows and and hang around all season in big ole bunches. Could happy days be ahead?

dos - I've had ringneck and they are fine. I'll break out the ole buck knife next time I dust one. I assure you that if one even looks at my spread he's gonna cartwheel.
