Thinking of planting milo for doves this year. I have never planted any and have a few questions.
1. How long before dove season do I need to plant it.
2. What is the best way, Boradcast or row?
3. How much fertilze per acre or for 4 acres?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Seed may be somewhat in shorter supply this season, but get a good hybrid that is "Concept" treated. Plant before May 15. Wide rows are usually harder to keep clean, so I would look at narrow rows (2-3 seed/ft on twenty inches). Dual + Atrazine at planting. Put out half of your fertilizer preplant or at planting and come back with the rest after the milo is 4-6 inches tall. Look at 80-120 lbs of actual N/acre. You can actually fertilize a field the same if for sunflowers or milo and get good results, can plant strips of each and keep your herbicides on the right crop. One of the best fields I have seen the last two years is a milo/sunflower/bare ground strip scenario. Each strip is 8 rows wide and the scenario mimics itself all the way across the field. They plant wheat on the bare ground.

1. You need to plant ASAP, if you want to be ready for the first season. Recommended planting dates for sorghum (milo) optimal production are late April through mid May. Those planting dates will usually ready to harvest in mid-August.
2. Seeding rate can be usually be managed better if you use a commercial planter and plant in a row. However, sorghum can be planted broadcast or with a grain drill also. However, thick planted sorghum will not provide favorable (bare soil) landing/foraging area for the doves.
3. Take soil samples to determine P, K, lime and other nutrients. About 100 lbs/a of actual N (not pounds of fertilizer source) should be plenty for sorghum grown for wildlife.
