I am looking for a SLR camera but I don't want to pay a fortune for it.
What would be the best for around 5-600 bucks.

For a lower priced body, the Canon Rebel XSi looks nice.

Don't rule out the used market either, you can pick up a used camera off fredmiranda.com

For that price you can get a used 30D.

I just bought an XTi and love it. I know others on here that would tell you the same. Compact, affordable, and every good quality. It is basically the same camera as the new XSi only the screen is half as inch bigger and it 12.1 mp's vs. 10.1. Good luck!

Not sure of the all differences but I have the Rebel xt and am happy with it?

Just take lots of pics and cull the bad and keep the few good ones.

I need to get an external HD to store my pics.... any suggestions?

I recently bought an XTi myself. I was looking at the XT, but the XT was kinda limited and cheap looking. The XTi has a much better look and more features. The sensor cleaning sold me on the XTi too. I don't have large enough pictures printed to justify 2 extra MP, so 10 MP wasn't that bad in my book.


On the external HDD, I have a Western Digital 500GB EHDD and love the little thing. I also have an external firewire enclosure that I need to buy a new HDD for. It currently has a old 40GB drive in it and want something larger. I have all mine hooked to my office computer and it is hooked to my router. From there I can access all the files from my laptops in the living room via my workgroup. You can get NAS enclosure that would allow you to hook it directly to a router and it would assign it's own IP address for accessing it over a network. That would bypass using a host computer like I am doing.

What are some of your thoughts on the Nikon D40?

looks to be a decent camera...if i had it to do all over again I might choose nikon....the D3 is a bad machine....and that 200-400 f4 zoom would be nice....

as for the D40, I don't have any experience with it, but remember it will only autofocus with certain nikon lenses since there is no autofocus motor in the camera itself....

I think the Canon rebels have a slight edge at the lower end....but at the "pro" end canon lost any edge they might have had.....

I am not going to try and take professional style pics. All I want is a good camera that can be used for point and shoot and that I can take in the field with me to hunt tests or on a hunt. That is why I am looking at the slr's. The point and shoot camera that I have now can't take action shots very well.
I don't want to spent a lot of money on lenses and all of that jazz. I just want a good camera that I can use right out of the box.
What do ya'll suggest now?

i'd find a good deal on a used 20d....or you can pick up a rebel XT, and spend the rest on glass (you will need it)....

You know, I'm married to canon with all the glass I have, but Gordon is right. That D3 Nikon is a remarkable body. The best out right now, better than anything Canon has right now. Canon glass is still better though, IMHO.
