Your first job?
What was it, how old, and why?
I cut grass in the summers from age 9 until 15 and worked on the farm doing bullchit for my granddad. I got my first "real" job when i was 15, actually the day i turned 15 was my first day at work,at the local grocery store. Dad decided i needed to learn the value of a dollar!! Worked it out where i could work after school and did it for 4 years working my way up the chain of command. Dad said it would give me Independence or something another. Plus my family wasn't overly loaded and if i wanted to drive the truck in the driveway i had to figure out a way to pay for gas. Started out stocking shelves, sweeping floors and sacking groceries. After a little hard work i got to supervise operations, and destribute my work to other coworkers

. Finally got to be produce manager and 2 months later moved off for college.
So what was your first job?

First real job........bus boy/fry cook at Bonanza at 14..... Next one I remember was road crew work for an asphalt company at 15 or 16 one summer when it got up to 106 a couple of times. Mostly just worked summers as I was in all sports through high schools. Also while in college worked at the local beer barn and bartended my last couple of years.
Don't miss any of them.......not a bit.

Hall's Feed & Seed in the 8th grade my friends family owned the place so me and my buddy would work 6 to 6 on Saturday's either loading feed and hay or sleeping on the feed sacks until a customer came.

We got paid cash out of the register b/c we weren't legally suppose to be working then.
First legal job was Easyway Produce, at 16, truck unloader/stock boy.

Picking cucumbers @ age 5 through 12. The # of rows increased with age until the age of 13 when I was raising and picking an acre of friggin okra. @#$%!@#@#$ Oh yeah, cutting yards in my "spare" time. These were summer jobs my Dad made me undertake. At 14 I got a job after school and weekends working in a printing shop which I kept until I went to Ole Miss. After that, I got a job as an inventory clerk at a large manufacturing facility. Went back to school and got a decent paying job, finally.

Pumping gas, washing windshields, and doing oil changes at Red's Texaco on 15th Street in Yazoo City. The next summer, I hooked on with the MS Highway Dept. where I started off in maintenance (cutting grass), graduated to survey crew (cutting lanes though swamps) and construction crew (driving bluetops), then to the lab where my job was to drive a drill truck all over the delta to sample soil. Did that until I graduated from State and got married. Favorite part of that job was eating lunch at Fratesi's in Leland and ogling the girls at the public pool across the road. Oh, yeah, there was that girl in Arcola that liked to sunbathe when we ate lunch at the store across the street from her house (she was smokin' and was a cheerleader at Ole Miss! Wound up dating her some...I can tell you, it is a long drive from Arcola to Yazoo at midnight, but I smiled the whole way!).
Here's to the salad days!

Started chopping goat weed in the cotton fields around age 10 or so, worst job ever!! I wasn't even tall enough to see over the cotton stalks. Would be soaking wet the first 10 min of work, If any of you have kids that are lazy, put them out there and let them ho some weeds in a cotton field. It will give them the act-right they need. Then got turned loose on the tractor, may have been worse, but got used to it. Then turned 18 and got the hell out

Started chopping cotton at 11 or 12. Started driving a tractor at 14. Now I'm at 27 and I still chop cotton and drive a tractor. Wouldn't trade it for nothing. I actually get paid to play in the dirt all day.

I would shower up and head out in the evening for those fun summer nights. Those are great memories!!!!!

At 13 and 14 a friend and I chopped cotton for his dad from 6 til noon, got the afternoons off to play ball. At 15 I started working on another friend’s farm and drew the short straw for turn road maintenance. Basically all I did was clip turn roads all day long every day, occasionally I got a break from that to service the power units. I moved on to another farm the next two summers, where I again became the turn road mower. At least I got an umbrella for the 4020 that second year.

When I wasn't mowing I was pulling or spraying red rice. Worked as a scout for a cotton consultant my senior year. Worked in a machine shop my freshman year of college building farm equipment. Lucky me got to do all the prepping for paint, which means sandblasting everything and grinding down all the rough spots. There's an awful lot of %**$% to sandblast and grind on boll buggies and subsoilers

Spent the rest of my college years working nights at a wholesale distributing company inputting salesmen orders. I've been a technician with the NRCS for the past 4 years now and absolutely love it.

Helped my dad mix paint for Cook & Riley in Tupelo (Nettleton at the time) at about age 10 I think. It was in a nice air conditioned building with all the free cokes I wanted. Big warehouse to run my remote control car around in during the slack time. Made a whopping $5/hour which was huge at that age. Worked about 15-20 hours/week. Saved up a whole summer and bought a .22 cal. pellet gun first and then a .22 auto next and then a .410 pump before summer's end and racked up on squirrels and dove in the fall. Best summer I could remember as a kid.
