Someone please tell me if I am incorrect in my assumption. I might be completely wrong.

DU is fighting agianst pumping in the lower delta for fear of drying up habitat and the other people are currently fixing to be flooded out and want to pump the water from the lower delta. Is this correct?????

Honestly I am somewhat uninformed (ignorant) to this and would like to know more. No smart alek comments please (i know some of you won't be able to resist  ), just give me some info.

tombstone here is the low down. They delta does not drain the way god intended it too due to the levee and the steele bayou control structure. The upper delta is not affected like the south delta. Where flood waters use to come in and receed they cant any longer. We just sit there accumilating holding water that does not go anywhere until they can open up the locks. Think of it as a bowl draining from the bottom with a pin hole punch in the bottom of that bowl. By the time the water has drained we have had water on us longer than if the river had played its natural course (much longer). It devistates turkeys and probablly other species as well.

On the flip side the land on the inside of the levee is accumalating alot of silt that it didn't use too b/c of the levee. This silt use to be deposited across the whole delta, now just one small portion therefor changing species composition within the levee. You notice how few oaks there are left over there. The researcher I listened too said the ph inside the levee is has actually changed becoming to basic for oaks (thats right basic). You see this fresh fertile silt from the north should be depostited across the whole delta yet it isnt.

I have personally seen cottonwoods cut that were the sand and silt deposits where around 5' high at the base of the tree. This was near Lake Albermare.

The other side of the locks so it can flow down the MS.

Fellows, lay off of DU. The DU announcement posted here by BRF was simply an informative one, letting everyone know of the EPA's current intent to veto the pump project, and informing or reminding everyone about the public hearing and need for your input, whether you agree with the project or object to the project. There is nothing sinister here. No black helicoptors. Just an attempt to keep everyone informed about an issue that has potential implications with respect to our wetlands or lack thereof.

Save your breath and angst, one way or another, for the hearing. Or if you cannot attend, make your views known by other means --- call or write to the appropriate persons.

Po Monk, I am the face(vol.) of DU and I am being serious by asking what their stance is as I am a member in good standing. It has nothing to do with chiding BRF or anyone else. We need some sunshine on issuses that effect us all as hunters and user of the South Delta from the org. we so feicerly support!

Forgive my ignorance, but if the locks were open, wouldn't the flood waters be deeper than they are right now? I was under the impression that they close the locks when the MS is higher than the water behind the locks....so if they opened the locks, the MS would rush in and basically flow backwards up the Yazoo and Sunflower, which would, in effect, flood the south Delta even more than it is now.

I'm just thinking of the gates on Wasp Lake. Wasp Lake is the bottom of the Bear Creek watershed that drains pretty much everything from Itta Bena south down to the Yazoo River. When the Yazoo rises higher than the weir on Wasp (95 feet), they shut the gates to keep the Yazoo from backing up into Wasp. Right now, Wasp is at 100.89 and the Yazoo is about 105.
