I'm about to make the move to get a lab. You guys have any training tips or info on training I might need. I"ve never trained a dog so I'm gonna need all the help I can get.

I recommend getting some training books and DVD's. I like Smartworks by Evan Graham and try to find a group to train with.

WaterDog by the godfather of dog training Richard Wolters himself is a great book for the do it yourself trainer and his techniques work well and fast and if you are the more visual type I hear there is now a dvd based on this book available at bass pro hope this helps.

Read "10 Minute Retriever"..basically you spend 10 minutes a day or session with your dog training. Find a trainer in your area. Offer to help him. He will gladly let you wash kennels out, throw marks, set up bumper boys etc. Then he might be glad to help you train your dog in return. Be up front and tell him your intentions that you want to "learn" how to train your dog and not free training. My other two words...BE PATIENCE...go at the dog's pace not a DVD or Book pace....Have Fun and expose him to everything.....set your dog standards high and he will be that high of standard ...set them low expectations and he will be low..........good luck

Do like you are doing, ask for advice, read all you can, read the dog and take time, don't rush it. I had one well on the way a few years ago and tried to speed up the process and ended up turning her against retieving for me anyway, traded her and she went on to be a great hunter. BE PATIENT!

the gun dog forum here offers some great info, you can try http://www.holdingblind.com and there are also several books and videos out there. I am sure if you know some one with a dog or a trainer ask them to tag along.

And and e collar is not to used as a way train. The dog should already be trained and know what you want before putting the juice on. The juice is just to get the dogs attention and get them back on focus.

read the aforementioned Wolters book twice and then try to apply it.

find a good trainer that lives close to you and spend as much time as possible with him when he trains.

involve yourself with a hunting retreiver club and train with them every chance you get.
