Look up Kevin or Dennis James in Ashland, Ms. Don't think they are breeders but they can put you in contact with theirs.

At one time (early '80's), Alpine Kennels in Memphis bred Chessies. Friend of mine got one there...heck of a dog!

Obviously, I must not know the man very well, or I would have posted an opinion of character. I've only been around Kevin and Dennis twice, and neither struck me as impolite. As a matter of fact, they didn't know me from Adam's-House-Cat, and invited me to anything they had; including a seat at the table and something to drink. Welp, I guess that's nice enough for me...

If you've ever been up to an OLD HATCHIE HRC hunt test, I know you will have enjoyed yourself, and I'll bet your rent money that 98% of that work was done by Kevin or Dennis James.

I've only been around a couple of Chessie's before, I do know they make great guard dogs.

There's a fellow named Bo Hood who lives between Grenada & Carrollton
(I think he has a Carrollton phone #) who has a nice chessie bitch & has had some pups in the past....... if he doesn't have any, maybe he can point you in the right direction.

Hey btp....why dont you just buy a poodle?? I guarantee that it will be easier to train. You could even get you a black poodle. Ewwww........even better huh?? :lol:

I like the old adage: train a golden by voice, a lab with a stick, and a chessie with a 2x4. I've owned 2 of the 3 and so far it's pretty accurate.

I spoke with micah a little on this subject in private, I will enlighten you a little bit. We had a VERY good place to deer hunt in Ashland in the wolf river bottoms until a couple of years ago until he stuck his nose in it. Him and his running buddies have enough land around there to hunt on and they got us kicked off our place. As far as I am concerned he and his whole group of running buddies are WORTHLESS. Old hatchie, Heck his dogs are trained by a pro for him he probably just shows up and tries to take credit. $$$$$ talks!!! I will leave this subject alone and just let it be known that I wouldn't do business or associate with anyone they do business with.

There are a lot of holes in the personalities of people we meet, when it comes to our hunting. I don't know your situation, but if someone had you "kicked off the land", then it apparently is owned by a third party, and therefore they were persuaded to make other usage of it. Doesn't matter who ended up with it, or how the events took place, take it from personal experience that this is a bad grudge to hold. I've held the exact same type, and would make any effort to reconcile the example of "sportsmanship" I exemplified, to the public-non-hunters, that hunters are sportsman and not trigger happy or blood thirsty.

You say Kevin and Dennis have their dogs trained.... you are right. Linda and Jeff Brewer of Duk Dawg Retrievers in Selmer, TN do the training for them. Nobody is claiming the James brothers train. I've never known them to toot their own horn about it. Even if he did, he has the right to be proud of his dog. Why cut him down about pride over a dog? I'll tell anyone within ears reach about my dogs, but that don't mean I was the trainer of their great-grand-sire, or helped welp the litter.

You just bought a new pup right? From Jesse Shephard, right? Hate to inform you, but Jesse is a LONG standing member of Old Hatchie, and knows the James brothers very well. He has run more tests with Linda and Jeff than you could ever count, and has hunted all over the country; expecially around Ashland/Tuscumbia/Booneville areas.... guess that means you have associated with their friends.

I wasn't suggesting doing business with Kevin or Dennis on puppies. They don't raise puppies, nor do they train dogs. They work and enjoy hunting, same as we all do. I'm not sure where their dogs came from, and I'm not totally sure that they own a chessie, but I'm fairly positive one of them owns a chessie dog. You got a chessie man right in your back yard.... Marty Newport. Don't know Marty all that well, either, but what times I've been around him, he was always nice to me. Maybe you'd like to cuss about him for a little while before anyone gets the idea he's stolen some deer woods from you as well......

I'm still laughing over this... Yeah, money talks. Talks a lot to me. So much, in fact, that I just sold my male yellow lab to a man in KY for $5000.00... I don't give a rats butt if he takes credit. I hope he does. Just makes it that much more enjoyable when he calls back to buy another one.
