webbmasters 2008 SEC Q&A

Postby webbmaster » Tue Aug 12, 2008 11:56 am

Let's get some good SEC talk going. A few out of the norm questions in here. A bit lengthy, but not much going on today.

Who will win the SEC this year? Georgia. Probably the easy choice, but if there was ever a year they were going to do it, its this one.

Coach of the Year? I think Nutt would be a probable choice as an underdog, but they would likely have to win the West. I just dont see them doing it, but a good year none the less. I'll take Richt because if he gets through that schedule and wins the SEC (likely putting them in the NC game) then he will win it.

Sleeper team in the West- Ole Miss; Although, that Hardy loss is going to hurt,
Sleeper team in the East- TN; No one is really talking about them. You almost want to say South Carolina, but not with the east as tough as it is.

Biggest bust in the West- Auburn: Lots of preseason hype with them usually means a fold. 2 new coordinators and a new offense that hasnt really been tested in the SEC. Not alot of experience at QB.
Biggest bust in the East - South Carolina: They are predicted to place 4th in the preseason, but its just because the competition is so tough. I think they fall close to .500 and do far worse than they expect.

Which coach losses job? Everyone is safe. Some say Fulmer but he would really have to ass it up and he just signed a new contract. No one is fired, but Rich Brooks might step aside. Spurrier could decide to play golf as well.

Biggest upset in the SEC: Basing these on likely heavy underdogs as of right now. I'm thinking Ole Miss pulls one over Auburn or LSU. I dont see there being one in the East within that division. Kentucky and Vandy aren't that good this year, although the wildcats will have a strong D.

Out of conference team you would like to see SEC team destroy: Off the top of my head, Clemson, West Virginia, Arizona St, UCLA, Texas, Georgia Tech, Miami. I may be missing one or two, but I think I covered the big ones. Obvioulsy I would like to see Bama destroy Clemson strictly because they have already proclaimed themselves national champions this year. Its always fun seeing Texas lose, but they will destroy Arkansas. If Rick Neuhisel comes in his first year and beats the big orange, it would be hilarious, so I'll be pulling for the Bruins. I would cheer for Auburn if they were playing a Rich Rodriguez West Virginia team since he is such a weasel, but he's not, so the hell with Auburn. I'm going with Clemson and Miami.

Game you are most looking forward to watching? I would have to say Auburn. I think this is the year we snap the streak and get things back on track.

Game you are least looking forward to watching? TN. That booty whooping we put on them last year has got to sting. Plus they will be tough at home with a very good D.

Favorite "away" game town/school you plan on attneding this year? UGA. Fun town. Should be even better if they are as good as hyped going into it. On other years its Oxford strictly because LSU, Auburn, and TN makes me vomit just being there.

Coach you would most like to kick in the nutz: Les Miles. Not because he has beaten us 3 years in a row. Hell, there are plenty of other SEC coaches who have done that lately. Not because of the Saban deal or their recent NC. Just the stuff that comes out of his mouth is god awful.

Favorite game day drink: screwdrivers in the morning. Scotch during the game.

Who will win the SEC this year? Florida will beat Bama in the SEC title game, although I think Florida will have two losses. No SEC team will play for the national title this year.
Coach of the Year? I actually think Nutt is the lock here as Ole Miss will be much improved with solid talent and good coaching. If not Nutt, probably Saban.
Sleeper team in the West Ole Miss, and it ain't close. In fact, they are not really a sleeper any more as I believe most people think they are going to be pretty good, with the exception of many Ole Miss fans. I think the Ole Miss nation has O syndrome. It is a new day in Oxford. Ole Miss will beat Florida or LSU this year (I think they play Florida).
Sleeper team in the East I am going to say UT, but a close second would be South Carolina. I look for them to knock off UGA in week two (or three) of the season.
Biggest bust in the West As bad as I hate to say it, LSU. If their defense does not live up to its billing (which means playing better than last year -- they were not that good in SEC play), this team could lose 5 or more games.
Biggest bust in the East UGA. They are a injury or two away from losing 5 games with their schedule.
Which coach losses job? Possibly Johnson at Vandy, but more likely than losing a job, if South Carolina is not very good, I look for Spurrier to retire.
Biggest upset in the SEC: Ole Miss over LSU. It has been very close three of the last four years. It is bound to happen at some point and this could be the year.
Out of conference team you would like to see SEC team destroy: I would love to see USC get mauled by an SEC team in bowl season. This is a game that nobody on here cares about, but I want LSU to beat Appy State by 70. Appy State folks have been talking crap since the Michigan game last year about this LSU game.
Most anitcipated game you are looking forward to watching? LSU v UGA
Game you are least looking forward to watching?LSU v. Bama
Favorite "away" game town/school you plan on attneding this year? Hoping to make it to the Plains to see LSU v Auburn
Coach you would most like to kick in the nutz: Meyer, and its not even close.
Favorite game day drink: I tell you, otherwise I am not a big fan, but for some reason, Jim Beam is a fall football favorite for me, whether straight up or mixed. It just smells like football.

I didn't realize there is so much hatred for Les Miles. I realize that many, if not most, people think he is an idiot, and I tend to agree to an extent. However, he did win a national title. The vaunted Pete Carroll could not do the same last year in a weaker conference and more talent.

I suppose people don't like folks who bumble through life making poor choices that always seem to work out anyway. I readily admit that some of those type decisions are going to burn him at some point.

If you listen to him talk, he is not impressive, nor are some his decisions. However, he as a national title and two BCS bowl wins. His record is better than Saban's record and his recruiting is on a par with anyone in the country.

What does Saban's record have to do with anything? This is about wanting to kick someone in the nutz.

And just for the record, Pete Carroll could use a swift kick himself.

I simply bring Saban up as an example of a really good coach who also happened to coach the same program in the same decade. Everyone in college football respects Saban more than Miles...heck, Forbes says he is the most powerful coach alive. You Bama faithful will get bent out of shape over the most benign comment about Saban. It is not a shot at Saban (hell, its a compliment), just an analogy that Miles is not as bad of a coach as many like to believe.

As to Pete, I concur.
