Pawning jewelry

I have a lady at one of my offices that has some old gold rings and necklaces. A few of them have some small diamonds in them. They are nothing special and she was cleaning out her jewlery drawer and told me to check around and see what I could get for them. She isn't doing to because she is broke, just wants to see what they will give her for them. My question is do I take them to a pawn shop or a jeweler? With the diamonds, will the pawn shop just give you money for the gold and try to stiff you on the diamonds? What about getting a jeweler to seperate the diamonds and the gold and sell it as seperate so they could melt the gold down. I have no idea about this kind of stuff.

You will never get close to the value of them from a pawn shop or a jeweler. If the diamonds are small they are probably junk from the start. Beast bet is to sell them off to an individual. Bring them with you Wednesday night and I will look at them.

Hi,I am a pawnbroker so this is the way it.On 14 kt you can expect to get around $7-8 a gram,10 kt around $5 a gram.diamond chips are almost worthless.5pt to around 20 pt diamonds are $1.00 a point.larger diamonds are on size and clarity,but still no wheres near retail.You know the old story of losing 25%when you buy a new car,well jewelry has a 400% or more mark up so you lose that the minute you walkout the doorThat means that a jewelry store pays $100. and sells it for $400 or more.Right now a jewelry store gets $60 a gram or more for 14 kt gold.Scrap value is around $14 a gram.
You can say the pawnbroker is ripping you off,but it is not their fault that to much mark up was paid for the item.Face it ,most jewelry is not bought using the big brain.
