My wife has decided that...

she wants to try deer hunting this year. She's 5'2" tall and about 110lbs, do y'all think a 30-30 would be too much for her? We're making a trip to Sportman's Warehouse this weekend and I plan on buying one of the Sims slip on recoil pads for her. She tried my 25-06 but the heavy barrel was too much for her to hold up.  It's a heavy barrel Savage target rifle, 13lbs fully loaded.

The 7 mag and 45-70 would probably knock her into next week and everything else I have it too small to hunt deer with, in my opinion. My dad has a newer model Marlin 30-30 that he hasn't used since he bought my 30-06 and I'm sure he'd let her use it but I just don't know if the recoil would too much. It's been so long since I used one that I can't remember the recoil.

If she would have dropped this on me a few weeks ago I wouldn't have sold the .243 Savage that I had. It would have been perfect for her. :?

youth model 870 20ga. combo rifle and smooth bore both for $399 my 8 year old shoots it fine, and with a 3x9 redfield i put 5 in an 8 inch circle at about 90yards and its pretty cheep to shoot depending on where your hunting and how far she plans on trying to shoot thats a low recoil option, but if she can shoot that 20 she should be able to handle that 30 30

Shes about the same size as my wife, so she should be fine shooting a 30-30....

I'm trying to avoid buying another small caliber rifle or shotgun until she figures out whether or not she will want to continue hunting. If she likes it, I'll get her a youth model .243 and make her practice every time I go shooting. God help me if she kills one bigger than I have on the wall... I'll never hear the end of it.

As little experience as she has with firearms, I'll probably limit her to a maximum of 100 yard shots. She's shot my .22 rifle and pistol but that was just pointing at the ground while I was working with my lab puppy. I'm going to start her out with my .17hmr this week and get her used to that first, since it's louder than a .22.

I've thought about setting up some sand bags and letting her shoot my 25-06 from those, it's so heavy that the recoil is very light.

Before I got my .270, I used a 30-30. Once I used a sabbotted bullet from my brother in that thing and killed a deer with it. Absolutely no recoil. I thought I was shooting a spitball when I pulled the trigger. Stick with the 30-30 until she gets ready for something larger.

when we hunt private land my little boy shoots the 7mm08 too and he does fine with it but some of the gov woods we hunt are shotgun only thats why he got the 20, but that model 7 rem 7mm08 is a fine gun by anyones standard

i agree that the Rem Mod 7 in 7mm.08 is a ideal choice for her.. or little heavier gun get it in 243.. i've killed countless deer and hogs with mine all the way to 300yds and drop em in their tracks.. its a sweet and deadly "little" gun.. my fiance will be using mine this year..

you never feel the recoil when you are shooting at a deer
