I think he's just got a collar. I never even noticed this before last year when Hambone pointed it out to me on one I killed.

I just don't ever remember a gadwall that had the black neck collar and such a two-tone head. He is a pretty specimen either way.

I think it has to do with age. I kave killed some in the past that had the starts of what your bird has. And Got one 3 years ago with a 3/4" solid black ring all the way around. As for the two toned head, I see that pretty often.

Whatever causes it to happen, it is a great lookin bird.
That one would go on my wall with no hesitation.

Yeah, It has made me look at all the ones we've killed since then even closer. I have seen no evidence of of the collar on any of them. I think you are right, it probably has to do with age. That was a big gad. He is in the freezer. So headed for the wall.
