We normally tie to the front of a barge that is being pushed up river and shoot em as they scare up. When we have our fill of that we cut loose and drift back down to where we put in. Very wise for fuel consumption.

I'm gettin on the tip of a rock dyke and putting out long lines to shoot divers. Man its a hoot! YOu should try it sometime

I understand how things work around here, but give me a break! We're talking about a river that runs for over a hundred miles (I have no idea just how far) with god-only-knows how many backwater areas and islands.

I have a friend who has a friend who has a friend, you know the drill, who says they drove over from NC to hunt in Arkansas a few years back. They hunted some fields and when they got ready to leave, the landowner told them they ought to try the river on their way back. They had no clue what that meant, so they just went out that day, put in around lunch, and found a little island that had a little slow moving water on one side and threw out some decoys. They hammered the ducks that afternoon and my buddy told me I should try it, since it's looking to get real cold this weekend and my normal spot hasn't been producing like it was at the beginning of the season.

I have heard all the jokes about setting up in the main channel and dodging barges and such, that's why I asked what y'all meant by "hunting the river." I have never been on the Miss. and have no way of actually going by myself. Just curious.

I started getting on the river duck hunting this year. my $.02 is, Keep a good log of of river levels, dike locations, sand bars. never take anything for granted while boating on the river, always keep your guard up. I so far have enjoyed the hunting on the river and do not think there is anything else like it. To answer your question, yes that is what everyone is talking about when they say hunting the MS, backwaters, eddies, sandbars, islands, creeks or any other area that is flooded by the river. Just do some work by scouting looking at maps and you will figure the rest out. Be careful and good luck!
