Okay, I've had many dogs in the past, but none that like to bark as much as my new puppy. What do some of you suggest I do to break his habit of barking all the time?

Bark Collar? It works well on my wife and kids.

I agree and start now.

Enforce strict silence and do it quick. Barking can get out of hand real quick and if your dog is going to become a hunting dog can really become a problem fast. What has worked for me is to put the dog in a stiuation where they are giong to bark. i.e. in the kennel and simulate you being gone i.e. hide from him. As soon as he starts barking, come at him in his kennel like the world is going to end, yelling hush as much as you can. Once he gets quieted down again repeat the process until he understands what hush means and that he is not to bark at all. The big thing is be as consistent as you can, don't let him get away with it one day and enforce it the next. IF you are gone, have your wife or buddy do the same thing, you dog wants to please you first, so once he learns what you want you should eliminate the problem. A bark collar is also an option but not one I'd reccomend if you dog is very young. Teach him to listen to you as that is the basis for all training in the future first.

And NEVER give in to the barking. Only dog that gets let out of kennel is a quiet dog... don't care if his eyes turn yellow, until he is quiet, the only attention he'll get is a cuff and a hush. Everytime you are not consistant, you add to the problem. travis

Does he bark even if he is out of the pen?

I agree w/ Goosebruce. Only thing I'd add is raise %@$$ everytime he starts, throw something, go out to the kennel twist his ears and throw him back in there.
I've found a good thrashing only has to be administered once or twice and the dog knows you mean business when you say "No!".

Tritronics bark collar does the trick. Go ahead and light there butt up..don't build up to find the threshold like they say to do with the assortment of electrodes. You aren't the bad guy to the dog...the collar is. Nipp it in the bud.

Beware - these collars are not to be used 24X7X365. Use them at night or whenever barking is a problem. Otherwise, the electrodes will dig into the dogs neck and the sore WILL become VERY infected. If the collar is not tight, it does no good.

Took my dog all of 1 whole evening to get the picture ! Made my wife walk up to the pen,... Then away.... Only had to bump him twice ( bump = not even 1 second!), ( all this while was in a hidden positon )

Only time you hear him now is when someone drives up in the yard !

Yea, those bark collars work. ...I have a big dog w/ a thick neck, and I wasn't sure the collar was doing anything, so I tested in out myself! One bark and it set me back in the chair! My wife thought it was a quite interesting experiment!! But, when in doubt... I should have put it on her.

duforester, I am in the same situation. My puppy seems to hate being alone. As long as someone is close to her she seems happy, but the second you walk away...... I have tried yelling, twising her ear, spanking, but nothing seems to have any effect on her. She just is not happy being alone. I may try the bark collar, but not for a while since she is only nine or ten weeks. I am open to any other suggestions.
