Some of you smart folks tell me this, we are in a time of budget cuts! Right! Well I have a little part time job where a bunch of really smart men an women work for the state! This is going somewhere just bare with me. Each of these men an women received a new hp pda an a IBM think pad. I think thats what the damn thing is called. Ok no problem they need new technology! Guess what they are doing with the old ones! Ding Ding! They are going to destroy them! What the hell is that all about! Sell the damn things recoup some of the money even if it is a fraction of the cost! Give them to a school somewhere! Nope! Going to crush them, take pictures an put them in the dump! Please inform me where I am wrong on this!

You just tell them its in the Jackson Metro area, dont want to lose my job! I can tell you this also, a couple weeks ago they had a very very expensive camera come up "lost, stolen or missing". Turns out a lady working there put it in a filing cabinet. They had reported it "lost, stolen or missing". Busted it up threw it away!

We surplus over 1000 computers every year. We give away maybe 100. The others, no one wants because they are outdated, damaged, or won't run current software. If we simply surplussed them as we do other items(furniture, etc), we would have to pay someone to come haul them away.
Instead, we have contracted with an Indian company. They collect our computers, haul them to a warehouse, take whatever components that have any value...about $25 per computer...crush the scrap and then they have to pay to dump the refuse. They collect the component parts, pack them in shipping containers and send them to India where they are are used in making less expensive computers at very low cost (cheap labor and large market for any type of technology).
We tried to find a company from the US to bid on this, but noone thought they could make enough money to justify it because of high labor costs and no market for low end technology.
It's a mess!

Could they have any information on them that is sensitive? Many state agencies are required to destroy harddrives in computers they won't be using anymore. Even if they are wiped and reformatted, there is software available that can retreive the old data - the original data that was "wiped" over.

Dont have a clue about all the technical stuff. Just know that there was at least 20 think pads an 20 pda's that went to the trash. Seems like a aweful waste to me.

Sounds like a typical state agency. Confusion and stupidity reign supreme. Just what does a guy have to do to get a job fixing these fubars?

Military does a lot of this stuff. They dont want to be liable if some kid gets tangled up in used netting or someone shots teir self with a M-16. They destroy em! Lots of stuff like that. I get your point though.
