season is closing soon. Has anybody done any good on wild birds this year?

We are starting to see a pretty good increase in birds over the last two years on our property. Might have to get another pointer if we keep seeing them. Sure are fun tho

i agree- fun only thing close to a group of mallards floating into a spread is a wild covey rise

Nobody else? My group probably had 8-10 diff. coveys located. Most hunts were 1 covey/ half day..rare occ. 2.....killed @25 birds ,maybe 35 including some days i couldn't go...like i said, hard hunting-gotta love it

Do not hunt them, but watch and listen for them anytime I am out. No doubt numbers are rising, especially around conservation tracts (CRP,WRP,etc). Now there is a new CRP practice for certain counties that calls for grass/shrub plantings with quail habitat being the main objective. There is more quail now than I have ever seen in my lifetime, but still hear from my Dad and others that it is maybe only half what used to be around in the 50's and early 60's.

I was looking for sheds yesterday afternoon and jumped a big covey probably 20-25 birds. They sure can scare the mess out of you when they flush. I have been seeing two big coveys all season.

I have been seeing more covey's in the past few years as well. Maybe these birds have adapted to the pressures that knocked out the populations in the 60's.

Those pressures were habitat loss and predidation.

Loss of fence rows and the like, overharvesting of out hardwoods in turn thick ash pine plantations and the coyote, and redtailed hawk.I bet my grandad shot thousands of those thing.

He also planted every nook and cranny in peas, lespidesa, egyptian millet and everything else he could read about to try to help. No telling how many thousands of dollars in flight trained birds he set out. We had certain coveys we were not allowed to hunt.

He loved those birds boy. Thats and deer hunting with dogs back when you could still do it was how I grew up.

I hope yall are right about the poupulation being on the rebound, waterfowling for the average man is on the decline and I need a good hobby for myself and my boy.


Why is it that the folk down south just freakin wipe the Hardwoods out and clearcut and the folk in the other parts of the country do a select havest and have better stands than we ever thought about.

Is it greed or stupidity or what?
