Anyone else beside me get invaded by termites this weekend? I had thousands and thousands of them coming out around the window seals throughout the house. I haven't swept or vacuumed this much in my life.

And no I'm not calling the orkin man.

Do you have bark mulch around the house? IF so, I would recommend switching to pine straw. Termite problem solved.

No mulch, scrubs, bushes, nothing.

This deal happens once a year, but this time takes the cake. I never knew what they were, just figured they came in around the window from outside and died once getting in. About half of these died within a few minutes of coming out of the bottom seals around the windows.

GH22, ole indian proverb says it ain't the ones you see that's the problem.....it's the one's eating your teepee that cause the issues.

Indoor Flying Termites

Locating flying termites inside of your home is not the most reassuring sight. There are cases that look better than others. If only a couple of swarmers are found indoors, they could have easily hitch-hiked indoors on someone's shirt or sweater or they could have merely flown through an open door or window. These pests have even been found crawling through bathroom and kitchen vents.
If large numbers of swarmers are found indoors, you need to have something done about it. One or two swarmers can be a coincidence but large numbers is definitely a sign that there is a colony in or underneath the structure.

We have many frantic phone calls from customers that want to purchase an insecticide to kill the flying termites in their home. As noted above, this is not necessary since the swarmers do not feed on your home. They are a signal that there is a colony in or beneath the structure which means that the home needs to be inspected and possibly treated by a professional that is licensed for termite treatment.
Swarming or flying termites often are seen near garage doors, other door or window frames (especially bay windows), columns supporting porches, dirt-filled porches and any expansion joints. An expansion joint is any area where two or more sections of a home are joined such as where a garage or patio is connected to a house.
If possible, sweep up the indoor swarmers and save them for your pest control operator. The number of swarmers as well their their location can be valuable evidence needed by the technician who will inspect the structure. A thorough inspection will determine the severity of the problem and what (if any) treatments are necessary.

Well, if there is no other source of wood for the termite infestation, other than your home, then what does that tell you? Pay attention to Gator's comments ---he be wise. You've got a serious termite infestation likely in the substructure of your house that needs some immediate attention. If you don't have the expertise to handle it yourself, then you may indeed need to call Orkin.

Orkin treated our house several years ago and we had a reinfestation a few years laster. It was covered under contract but it was still a pain. We noticed the baseboard in the middle of the house has these areas where you could put your thumb through. Called Orkin back and they retreated the house and replaced the baseboard. The little suckers has come up through a crack in the foundation in the middle of the house. They told me they can come up through a settlement crack like only 1/32 of an inch.

I found out later that Terminix had a life time guarantee where Orkin was only like 7 years. I'd check that before I got the house treated.

Hate to tell you but you have termites nesting in your house..they swarm each year just like bees. The main colony stays and the young of the year move out to find their own nest. Better call the man. I've been there and it's not good.

If you have swarmers coming out of your walls, and this is occurs every year, then you needed a termite treatment a long time ago. You definitely have a termite colony(s) in/under your house. I would treat it ASAP.

Greenhead you might want to call a pest control company. Our family runs one in alabama and when you have swarmers like that it generally mean that they are already eating at your house and if you don't get treatment they could eat your hose down. Trust me I've seen them hollow of the studs in a house.
