What do you do?

Postby torch » Thu Sep 25, 2003 9:34 am

I have a LARGE landowner around my leases that will flood fields and not hunt them just to hold ducks off me. Last year he dumped 3 truck loads of alphatoxin corn in one hole and had ducks out the kazoo. What can you do.

not much you can do from the legal side of it... it is OK to feed wildlife as long as you don't hunt over it....

Usually a person like that, has been "messed on" somewhere in the past, and probably aint got nuthin against you, or duck hunting... try talkin to the man,... maybe ya'll could work a deal out !

Then me and you will go "BUS-A-CAP"...

Good luck !

Seems the only thing you can do it talk to him and see if there is some middle ground you both can arrive at sort of a win win...if you can get there. Dont think fighting or threatening will do anything except make him unload two trucks of corn in every hole hes flooded. Your assumption may be right on target someone stepped on him in the past and this is his way of preventing it from happening again.

I've never seen a Butt whoopin solve land/hunting issues before.

See if he wants to lease your duck hole to feed the birds!

Or make a midnight run and pull the boards and drain his field!

This question will probably reveal me as a non-farmer for sure, but what is "alphatoxin corn?"

The same thing is happening to a friend of mine. I won't name names, but there is one man who more or less sets the cotton prices because he owns half of America's Cotton fields, some of china's, Japan's and Australia's. I think some of you know exactly who I am talking about. Well he has duck land all over the place, but one of his huge rice fields bordering where we hunt in Arkansas is cut every year with an open hopper and is not hunted. It is a refuge. You cannot put another speck, snow, canada, mallard, pintail, teal, gadwall, or widgeon in there. Quite frustrating. The good thing - goose bands everywhere!

Directions any one?

I think he might have meant aflatoxin (sp?), which is a chemical or something that forms in corn that is harmful to birds. It forms when you pile corn up and it molds with time. Doesnt harm ruminants (deer) as much as birds.

If it is indeed aflatoxin corn, then it IS HIGHLY ILLEGAL to dump this ANYWHERE. Aflatoxin corn must be buried and covered if it is not sold to an elevator. This issue came up in 98 when all of the aflatoxin corn was going around. People were just saying they'd feed it to their deer, but it is very, very, very illegal to dump this corn.

Make sure it's aflatoxin corn and go from there. As long as it's good corn, then you don't have many options. If it is aflatoxin corn, and migratory birds are feeding on it, then I think you may have a Federal offense.

There is no talking to this guy. He has enough duck holes to hunt a different one every day of the season. Delta Duck I did just that last year and stirred up a hornets nest. I'm not the only one he has done this to. He called the GW's on me at least 4 times last year but I have a pretty good record with Gw's around here and they are buddies of mine. All this started when we leased a "Break" from a farmer and this guy is on one end. He was raising cain because they couldn't kill ducks anymore in the break. I told him I would be happy to come down there and see if I could figure out why they couldn't kill ducks and he got offended. The kicker is he went through the break on our side of the line and put up 40 posted signs, inwhich I tore everyone og them down.

if you thought or knew for sure that the corn is contaminated i would report it to the federal dept of game and fish out of Jackson.... all corn that is contaminated with alfatoxin must be shipped with a bill of laden and signed by the purchaser..... which would make it easy to track... most contaminated corn is in Illinois where it is under watchful eyes... esp. if shipped out of state.... wouldn't be much of a case unless they could prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the neighbor was aware of the contaminated corn....

ps. if this did make it to federal court the g&f would have to reveal their informant{you} during the hearing....that ain't good if the corn is ok.... no chance of a meeting of minds then....
