I have a co-worker and her son who is 9 would like to get into bowhunting. She knows I am into bowhunting and asked me to help get him started. Of course he will have about a year to practice and shoot before next season. My question is this what pound bow should he be able to pull back comfortable that would also kill a deer? What are some good youth bows out there?

Mission (made by Matthews) makes a bow called a Menace, its really adjustable from like 17-28 inches, I'm not sure about the weight or where it starts but it goes as high as 50 pounds, available in right or left hand, I'm getting both of my boys that for Christmas, I think Parker make a youth bow as well

Every kid is going to be a little different, but I can tell you that he needs to find a bow with a very adjustable weight limit. He will probably start out somewhere around 30lbs, but will be able to jump up fast as he learns the proper way to pull the bow back. Plus he will use muscles he has never used before and once these get built he will be fine. As far as how much poundage is needed to kill a deer it really depends more on the bow. I have seen deer killed with 35-40lbs bows. Personally I shoot a Hoyt and they have a really nice youth bow out right now. Very adjustable and shoots pretty good. There are plenty other youth bows out there that will get him started.

My daughter shoots a Parker Sidekick XP, 30-40 lb pull. She is 14 and does real good with it. We plan on smokin one this weekend with it in spot we know they will be at.

The razors edge is the other one I had in mind. My dad owns an archery pro shop and said everyone from kids to men have been getting this bow. Suppose to be a bad dude with the wide range of draw length and draw weight it has to offer without having to change out limbs and I think you might not have to change out modules. Not certain on that model though..

I have a Browning Micro Adrinaline and it is great! It's adjustable from 30 to 40 lbs and real light. The Diomond Razer Edge is real nice too but a little heavier. I shot my first deer with a bow Sunday with it at 40 lbs. You can use 85 or 100 grain broadheads. I would recomend this bow to anyone.
