just wondering if anyone has used the backwater mallard brand calls that walmart sells. seen them last year and they are selling them again this year. wondered if they would be good for a beginner to learn the basics on. hes tried the dr85, quackhead and the nag. flow of air problem, either way to much at once or not enough to break the reed(s).

he was asking me about them and i didnt know about them so im asking yall.

i figured the dr85 is what he needed to learn on, i learned on it.

Here's the best advice I can give. It would be best to not start out on a double reed. Once you get started on a double, it's just harder to switch to a single after doing so. Any of the rnt or echo single reed poly calls, $20 range, will be best to start with.

I learned on a DR-85 and still have 3-4 in my blind bag. The fact is that they'll all kill ducks. It was difficult when I first started working singles, because the amount of air you put in makes a much bigger difference. I'd say the doubles are good to learn on because they're much more forgiving of mistakes and will help you learn cadence, etc. The downside is like Greenhead said...more difficult to switch over to singles. Although, maybe he'll be a double reed guy for life. Hell, I keep one on my lanyard and still blow it in certain situations.

I disagree with the 'dont start with a double', I recommend all of my hunting partners to start with a double and move over to a single.......it is really not that hard.

Duck Commander's calls average about 25 to 40 dollars... they are easy to blow and sound like a duck

This is why I don't follow this type of thinking.

1. It easier to teach first than to break bad habits.
2. Someone who is learning to blow a duck call should be hunting with a group who can already call and kill ducks. Ther fo the new ninja can listen for a period of time until he can hold his own. Ther is nothing more frustrating than a green ninja trying to blow a call who is two to four year out from "EARNING!!!!!" the right to call with duck killers.

I'm no Jedi caller but I'll be dam if just cause you want to "blow" your call don't mean I ant going to hurt your feelings. On the other hand I am very lucky I don't hunt with over 7-8 guys a year and we have been hunting together from 1979 being my dad to the last addition of the team in 1996 who was one of my fraternity/room mate at the club house now.

Dam just realized 35yrs old this will be my 30th year to duck hunt!!

I make calls and I also dont agree with the start with a single thing, The best sounding and most popular HUNTING calls are doubles. Ask anyone whos been around awhile and they will agree. Second its harder for a beginner to get a true duck sound from learning on a single.

I have major experience with this issue. I blew double reeds for 8 yrs because the duck is already built into the call. I finally forced myself to start blowing rnt single reeds. Once I got out of the forward pressure double reed blowing, the back pressure got easier to handle. All you have to do is put air through the call to sound like a duck. The air doesn't have to come from your diaphragm either. Doubles are the most popular because people like taking the EASIEST route these days. Why try to learn the right way to do something when you don't have to try?

A double is harder to learn coming from a single? It might take less than 5 min to adjust your air flow. It's all about WANTING to learn how to blow a call right.....not taking the easy road.

I work with double reed guys almost every week. It is a PITA to get someone out of the force grunting, forward pressure, cold air blowing..........crap.

i can get more ducks out of a double than you can get out of two singles
