i know, i know--shoulda bought good dekes to begin with

anyways i gots 4 dz. flambeaus that i'd love to be able to just "chunk and forget" instead of frantically uprighting dekes before sunrise, and don't even get me started on what fun they can be on a jerk rig

any simple/economical way to convert them?

Use sand or rocks plus silicone.

The judge posted a reply to a post of this nature a while back and said that he used or know of someone sealing the end of the keel with silicone. Then filling the keel with sand, just as GH22 mentioned. We have some water keel Pintail dekes and I just put strap weights in the keel and the seems to work just fine. Thats only for a couple dozen dekes though. I beleive that silicone and sand is the way to go. I would recommned that after you have the first 2 or 3 dozen to only buy magnum or super mangums with weighted keels unless you have to carry them a long distance each day.

You can get all the old tire weights you want from any tire store. You can hammer them up into the keel and they will stay and do the job for you.

Lead tire weights. You can get all you want for free from any tire store.
Hammer up into keel and they work great.

another easy and in-expensive trick is to cut pieces of re-bar {steel used in reinforceing concrete} and drive into the keel... cut it the exact lenght as the keel to keep level...

Use good marine silicone for underwater use. I used some #8 lead shot one time and it worked good, but I used some cheap household sealant. All the shot ended up falling out after a few uses. Now I have all G&H Magnum weighted keels and don't have any worries. Best plastic decoy ever made.

Just drill a bolt into each end of the keel, and put a nut on it, should be enough for flambeaus.
bingo

Walk a train track and pick up 4 doz old tie staked. They will wedge into the water keel with ease and if you are needing some water keel dekes then they are not impossible to get out.
