Our duck season started off with bang. Plenty of ducks and water, but I found out early Friday morning something was off with my lab. He wasn't marking any birds and was really having trouble seeing anything. He had been fine last weekend when I worked him at our lake, but it was like he was totally blind. I carried him to the vet yesterday and he said his retinas appeared to be detached in both eyes. He thought the right eye might have been that way for a while and the condition was getting worse in his left eye. He said that he had probably just been using one eye for a while and now had neither eye. He's has been a great hunting partner for 8 years and I hate to retire him, but it looks like I will be looking for a new pup this year.

Just wondering if anyone else has ever seen this in a dog before?

that is down right awful. Retinal detatchments can happen in any animal, and are more common in certain eye conditions. You may want to have your dog seen by a vetrinarian ophthalmologist. Retinal detatchments can be fixed by laser if caught soon enough. So the eye that the doctor said had been that way for a while could be unfixable, but the other eye if recent enough may be fixed. Now I am sure it would be a costly surgery as it runs around 8K for humans, but it is something you may be at least interested in exploring. Not sure if you have such a specialist in your area, but I know MSU has one at their vet school. I am sorry to hear about that with your dog, he seems like a very fine looking dog. I hope for the best for your dog.

My vet mentioned taking him to State and getting him checked there. Right he is taking some steroid drops in his eyes twice a day, but he said he would have to do this for the rest of his life.

I am very sorry to hear about your lab. I hope that there is something that can be done for him. It is very hard to find a good hunting partner and I can tell that you two are very close. Let us know how is does.

I hate that. My Chocolate is 8 now and I can't stand the thought of that happening to him.

sad part about owning a lab pup is that the big picture will find him and you getting too old too quick.... getting old has its set-backs, like eye sight and hearing and stiff joints....lucky for me and my 15 year old Sam, we aged togeather, slowing down each year.... guess we are both retired from hard hunting.....but like the pic of your dog, you can't take away our ambition and love for the sport.....or our memories togeather..... good luck with your good lookin dog.....

Take him to MSU. I worked for vets all thru high school and college, and have seen the vets at MSU (and LSU for that matter) return dogs to better than new condition on more than one occasion and many different ailments. Many when we thought they were hopeless. I will warn you, they are very costly. I can't give you a ball park figure but you will take a step back on most of their prices.
