I myself dont care for Puerto Rico. Id stay on the hotel property. Brush up on your spanish. Ive stayed at the Hampton Inn a few times by the airport. I stayed at another hotel right there right on the beach. It was older but the beach boy, Ramone, and the chef, Juan, where the shiznet and treated me right...may have been a holiday inn. Any of the casino hotels are descent. Traffic is a freaking nightmare. Old San Juan is cool...mind the ice heads and homeless

Caribe Hilton was a nice place to stay. I agree the old town had some great restaurants.
Don't drive unless you have to. The traffic and the drivers are really bad.

Thanks
we were going to stay a few extra days but after
reading a bunch of reviews, I believe that money
would be better spent somewhere else.

take note in the airport of all the "drug dealer" types in linen suits and shades with briefcases......wonder how much cocaine is flowing through there at any one time? I had a 6 hour layover in that airport coming back from St. Croix and its sketchy to say the least.
another cool thing is when were landing, there was alot of traffic so we had to circle the island at low altitude.....there is litterally a baseball field in every nook and cranny on that island. That was pretty neat.

The Condado area is pretty safe. There is a Marriott in the Condado, but it is expensive. The best value is at the Condado Plaza Hotel. You can stay in Old San Juan at some really nice, historic hotels.
Have a good trip!
