Mississippi accepted an invitation Wednesday night to play in the Cotton Bowl for the first time in 42 years.

The 17th-ranked Rebels (9-3), the SEC's representative for the Jan. 2 game in Dallas, will play a Big 12 team that will be determined Sunday.

No. 22 Oklahoma State (9-3), is the likely Big 12 opponent. But No. 6 Texas (10-2) also is a possibility if the Longhorns don't get an at-large spot in the Bowl Championship Series.

Ole Miss (9-3), which will make its sixth bowl appearance in seven seasons, is led by senior quarterback Eli Manning.

"It's exciting to be a part of this storied bowl with such rich tradition," Rebels coach David Cutcliffe said. "I'm truly excited about the opportunity."

Ole Miss has played in the Cotton Bowl twice before, beating TCU 14-13 in 1956, and losing to Texas 12-7 in 1962.

The Cotton Bowl has a $3 million payout per team, which is believed to make it the most lucrative bowl Ole Miss ever played in.

The Rebels advanced to their fourth bowl game in five years under coach David Cutcliffe after wrapping up 9-3 season that included a 7-1 SEC mark. Ole Miss finished tied with LSU for first place in the Western Division standings.

The team will be matched up with a Big 12 opponent for the second time in as many bowl appearances. The Rebels upset Nebraska last year at the Independence Bowl.

Good turn around for the Webels since the beginning of the year. Driesbach managed to come up with a defense out of thin air. Good season, good bowl, congratulations.

dedux,

what was State's SEC record the year they went to the SEC CHampionship? was their only loss to the #3 (should be #2) team in the nation?

Ya gotta give us credit. Also, i dont think we have ever finished dead last in the SEC 3 years in a row

Congrats to the Rebels.....Not a fan of UM, but I have a lot of respect for the Mannings and I'm pulling for Eli. I'm also looking forward to watching him on Sundays in the future. Good Season for the Rebs and best wishes in the Cotton Bowl.

GO Tigers........Memphis that is. Save the laughs guys, I know we are considered a high school by most folks, but I'm a fan and finally not ashamed to admit it.

well mudsucker,

you just better hope your team doesn't go into Atlanta with a head as big as yours, dont' forget about earlier in the season when this same Georgia team beat LSU up and down the field on BOTH sides of the ball, save two missed field goals and a broken route that happen to turn into a big play. Tough game on your hands in the championship. I'll be going for georgia just b/c i really dont' care for most of the LSU fans i know, the majority of which i never heard a word out of when they had a few down years a few years ago. The few that i know that aren't overly obnoxious are the TRUE die hards that cheered for them at that time. My other reason for cheering on the Dawgs is the way Lavalais (sp.?) and Saban, among others, complained and whined about the way they were treated in Oxford, the names they said they were called, they cried abotu being flipped off, etc etc. If they have such a problem with that stuff going on, they shoudl walk outside Tiger Stadium and tell the fans there to quit.

Jake,
I am 44 and have been an LSU fan since I can remember as I grew up in La. and used to love to watch the sunday "Charlie Mac show" so that is way back yonder! I am not that bigheaded. Just was having some fun with the guys that live and die UM/MSU football. I said I am pulling for the rebs in the Cotton but truth be told, in Ms. I pull for USM as my wife spent six years there(went on to get her masters, she was not on the slow learner program). I like their program. Good luck to the Golden Eagles in the Liberty Bowl  :D :D :D
