Crimson Clover

Postby thorn01 » Sun Mar 21, 2010 5:05 pm

Planted Pennington RackMaster this past season and the Crimson Clover is growing like crazy right now. What do I need to do to keep this Clover growing for our summer plots??? Sraying, cutting, etc?? Thanks in advance, Tony

Tony,

Crimson will not persist through the summer. It will start playing out by May. If you bought Rackmaster's MS Complete, it should have arrowleaf clover in it. If so, the arrowleaf will pick up where the crimson leaves off and should persist on to about June or so. Neither of these two clovers will last through the summer, only the white clovers will.

I would let the clovers mature out and not bush hog the plot until late summer. When you bush hog the plot you will distribute the seed that was made by this year's crop. Next September after you bush hogged the plot, lightly "tickle" the soil with a disk and add a mix of wheat and oats to the plot and you will get the blend all over again for a fraction of the cost. Don't deep disk, because you don't want to burry the clover seed too deep.
