Looks like a southern brown snake to me.
They are harmless and just eat slugs and worms.

A harmless one! I agree with Britlab. Let him live! Help keep the mice down!

found 3 of these things near my house during the past week or so & wife is freaked out by them. tried to explain to her that some snakes are suppoesedly "good" (even though i've never really studied them enough to know which ones), but she wants em dead. so guess what they are now...................wait for it...................that's right, they dead. oh well, maybe next time I can save the good ones.

Midland brown snake....eats grubs, soft shell insects, things of that nature. Caught two last week , put them in a terrarium to show the neighborhood kids, and they locked up and mated for over an hour. Quite an educational moment.

All I know is it was close enough for a pic, therefore it was close enough for a shovel to the head. Prob harmless, but the only way to know for sure is to let it bite you. Your choice!

No it's not! Learn your animals of the wild! This is a benificial snake as with most of them! We only have like 7 poisionous snakes here in MS. We have almost 40 NON-POISIONOUS Water Mocassins here in MS alone!

A water mocassin is another name for Cotton Mouth, which are poisonous.

$#!+ this sounds like the MDWFP forum now.... I'll toss my hat in the "good snake is a dead snake ring," but I've got a feeling some people may disagree.........

We have 5.
Cottonmouth (water moccasin)
Coral Snake
Copperhead
Timber (Canebrake) Rattlesnake
Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake
I too kill non-poisonous snakes. My wife won't walk outside if she sees one until I do.
