I know someone on here knows the proper name for a type of tree that grows in marshy, bottom land areas.....really soft wood, brittle wood and scaly bark. Willow looking leaves and but on short branches. Anybody know?

Without seeing the tree I will have to agree with jc and say its a River Birch. They have a really shaggy bark that is somewhat tan in color. Beautiful trees and are planted in alot of different landscapes.

i dont think so. the wood is really soft and they are bad about breaking in high winds. usually the tops break out and they die soon after.

Sounds like cypress to me. (Taxodium distichum) Wood can be dry and brittle but I don't know of them being very weak wooded. Look for the "knees"
The only others that come to mind are River Birch (Betula nigra) but they aren't weak wooded either and don't have willow like leaves but have the paper like shaggy bark. Look for lots of surface roots and leaves dropping year round.
Tupelo Gum (Nyssa sylvatica) is soft wooded and has an oblong leaf, but not scaly bark. Look for crimson leaves in the fall and "bell bottom" trunks
*I just re-read your question and I guess by proper name you didn't mean scientific name, but if your looking for what it is commonly know as you'll get a dozens of names for the same tree.
