Yard problem...crawfish

Yes I actually have a problem with crawfish...they are tearing up my yard. Before some wiseass says anything, I dont care about catching, cooking, and eating these
On a serious note, they have invaded my yard like Albanians on a Mississippi WMA that someone spouted off on some interweb chat board after killing 50-11 shovelers. I have a ditch in the front of my house and have seen several of their little "mounds"...but in my yard are just a bunch of little holes, with no mounding of dirt around them. Somebody told me its because my water table is really low, and I havent watered my yard in two years(had a thatch/fungus issue and had to choke it out)...does anybody know what I can do to keep these things from tearing my yard all to pieces?

build you a levee and flood the yard, sha!
you gets food and you get to not cut the grass, what more can you ask for? hell you might could plant the pond and hunt ducks in your front yard. I'm sure your wife wouldn't mind you building a blind out the bedroom window. Have the window pop out and you can sit inside the house in the warm air.
oh wait, you said no wiseass comments, my bad.
Bout the only way to deal with them is to bring in fill dirt and build up the yard. I think the guy may have meant to say that the water table is high. Nothing is available to kill them, but ORTHENE WP can be used to repell them out of the area where it's sprayed. Or you can catch them and relocate them.
They won't hurt your yard by the way and can help as they create aeration in the dirt. The mounds can just be knocked down or picked up and thrown in a ditch or out the yard.

go to the pound and get a couple of cats...feed them just long enought to take care of the rats then stop putting food out.

Orthene Wettable Powder. It's very common and can be picked up at the Co-Op. Active ingredient is acephate and has a very distinct smell.
Sprinkle an ounce or so around each entry hole and that will solve your problem. It may take multiple applications but acephate is very cheap.

Be very careful on the application around your holes...

Thanks...is it the smell of acephate? What about one of the "ban" pesticides...dursban, lorsban or even diazanon? Can you just buy bulk acephate?

It's not the smell, but you'll never foget the smell when you get a whiff of it. Always an easy pesticide to identify by smell alone.
Acephate is common in a lot of fire ant baits. Don't worry about the "banned" pesticides, just pile up the acephate outside each opening.
I can't imagine you needing bulk quantities. I think a few pounds of this stuff will go a long way. Retail on a pound is less than $10 bucks.
