I am getting my 7 and 9 year old sons a 7mm -08 for christmas. i ordered some of the rem managed recoil loads. it had good reviews but would like to know if anyone had any personal experience. i understand it looses some of the distance and the groups are not as tight. but we not driving nails for a house, just shooting deer for the freezer. I dont want them to be scared of it. if there is something better for youth let me know.

Not really. It's by far the best selling youth gun we sell. Only problem is going to be getin the managed recoil loads. There's none to be had! Remington was suppose to run a lot two weeks ago but none have been shipped yet. I was told by my rep that one lot wasn't even going to fill half of the backorders! It's not a whole bunch of difference in the recoil if you go with the lightest bullet you can find for it and make sure you have a gel pad on em. They will be so happy just to have it they will never notice!

My 9 yr old daughter took her first deer this year with 7-08 managed recoil , she said that was better than her 243 , u will love that caliber

As with most niche items supply is often the problem. I am constantly amazed at short supply many components have. A gun with no ammo is a club. I might think about a 243 instead or BR's good idea of light bullet and gel pad.

limbsaver recoil pad...it does its job very well! was released by surgeon to shoot (after interior lepsum/rotator cuff surgery) and was sighting in .270 handi a few days later, w/limbsaver, with little to no discomfort after 6 or 8 sequential shots - i was very surprised and pleased that recoil was managed that well and that i wasn't writhing in pain from it....needless to say, i flinched like a lil sissy on the first shot thinking it was gonna be painful, but it was not. only reason i felt any discomfort was because i let the edge of the stock rest in an entry point for the surgery on one shot.

remington claims to have a recoil pad out that takes out even more "shock" than limbsaver, but it was a remington rep trying to sell me on them after they had just come out....haven't tried them, so i can't give any feedback on them.

I ordered the shells from cabelas. Suppose to be in next week. My dad bought this gun to have for when he takes grand kids, he loves it. He has got to where he takes it even if he is by himself.

The 7 08 managed recoil work great. My son is 8 and he has killed 2 does and his first buck which was a 200lb 10pt this afternoon with it. He has the ruger compact bolt action and I would recomend it to anybody. The only problem I see with it is that you wont get much blood but it devestates the insides. Just like with any caliber or bullet if you hit em good they wont go far. His farthest shot was today on the 10pt at 100yds and it did a number on him. Ive just never been a big fan of the smaller calibers and with a 7 08 they will use it forever whereas the 243 they will think they need a bigger gun in a couple of years. Good luck with finding the managed recoil though we are down to 6 rounds left and cant find em anywhere.

+1 on the 243... Way more ammo choices..

Thx guys, and cabelas said they have them so we will see. And I will check out the sportsman guide also. I may order another box. Can't. wait to see them shoot it. I'm telling myself they will have to wait till Christmas. Lol.

That wasn't directed at you, it was letting the other guy know that people actually do have some.

How much less "kick" do these have? Is it very noticeable? I'm thinkin g about putting a youth stock on my 7-08 for my son and daughter and going with the redeced recoil.

My .308 doesn't have much recoil as it is, but there is a VERY noticeable change when shooting the managed recoil loads!!!! It even has considerably noticeable less recoil than the .243.

Im sure you can find the managed recoil loads online, I was just talking about the availability locally. Ive called everyone in the Jackson area and they said there was no way they could get them. Just doesn't make sense to me why they wouldn't produce enough for the demand. I have been told that the 7-08 is the most popular caliber now and with all the kids hunting seems like a no brainer to keep everybody stocked up.
