Everywhere I've ever read said hands down any cut up fish is the best. The more oily the better. You hear all these crazy ideas like alpo but cut up fish is the best bet. Are you running them for bait or food?

We take a can of cat or dog food stab a few holes in the can and throw a few fish scraps in the cage.

Cut shad is definitely best for cage traps. If you running nets I would go to your local butcher and get some melt. It's easier to tie to the middle of your nets and works just as good.
