I thought defacing currency was against the law or is that just what they tell you not to put pennies on the railroad.

I just hope the American People can see thru all this. We are going to have to cut and cut big time.. And Obama is just cutting discretionary spending which is like only 12% of the total budget. We are going to have to cut the big three, Social Security, Medicare and Medicade.

I am no where near as knowledgable on this stuff as some of you, but it irks me to see SS and Medicare on the chopping block alongside Medicaid. Personally, cutting Medicaid and stopping Medicaid/Medicare fraud would be at the top of my "to be cut" list. The only SS cut that I can justify is cutting folks out that didn't pay into the system. People like my grandparents that paid in from the beginning of their careers to retirement should get exactly what the govt has promised them.
So if you are talking about cutting the big three across the board with no discretion, I guess I am opposed, but if you are meaning to cut the fraud out of all three, cut benefits from the folks that didn't pay any or much into SS, and indiscriminately cut Medicaid as all other "put nothing in" entitlement programs should be cut.....then I agree.

i've taught college classes. 90% of those that get pell grants, abuse the system and just keep getting the free payday. about 50% of them never get a job, or even pass the classes. once that check comes in they bail, and leave the school hanging with the debt, keep the money. then they go get a job long enought to get unemployment AGAIN.

i say cut all the free crap.

if you don't work. you don't eat.

Here is a perfect example of what is the problem. My mom and Dad were married for 14 years from 1970 to 1984. My Dad passed away in 2006 and my Mom has remarried and divorced twice since 1984. Because they were married more than 10 years she can and is collecting is SS payment of 1,400 dollars a month for life (and she is only 60 years old) even though they were divorced for more than 20 years.

Wow. Well when you put it like that I agree that SS should be "cut", but this is where I and many other Americans probably get lost in semantics. If the polititians would stop throwing "cut" around like they are going to reduce a benefit by 25% for a 78 year old widowed lady that worked for 25 or so years, was married once to a man that worked for over 40 years and both contributed to the system every year each worked then maybe the clean up process we need to go thru would be an easier sell to the people. Hearing "we are going to cut Social Security and Medicare" scares the crap out of folks tho.

Cut welfare programs, cut Medicaid and cut Federal grants to low income students, but don't cut benefits promised to hard working people that contributed to the system.

Here the thing, if you "take away the free stuff", those are votes flying out the window like a flicked cigarette. Our system was setup FOR THE PEOPLE but it has switched FOR THE POLITICIAN. No politician is going to do this. Nor will the Rep or Dem party allow it. It's a numbers thing and those numbers are not representing you and me.
