I just returned from a day in Tallahatchie county. The weather has been perfect, the water levels are perfect, but there are just not the Ducks that should be in the area. Yes, there are some Ducks, but not what should be there given the past cold weather and water. I do not know what the explainations could be, but the forecast for a banner year in Duck populations is not reflected in what I see.

In a normal year with these conditions, you should see thousands of Ducks with some in every hole and visable in the sky at all times. Instead, I saw a few hundred and only in some fields, and only a few in the sky.

Something is just not right! If this is a good year, I certainly dread a poor year.

bear, did you see any geese on your adventure ?

I am going up in the morning to check out a piece of property. I will be going to a few other places too. Taking along the video camera, and I hope there are good numbers of ducks, but it doesn't sound like there will be. I'll update when I get back.

Its a stange thing sure enough. take the following instance for example. oN Friday 2-7-04 Don Miller made the trip from greenwood to yazoo city to vicksburg and then onto monroe la.... said he saw maybe a few hundred ducks, and hardly any geese...
I made a trip up 49 yesterday from yazoo city to greenwood, expecting to see little in the way of duck activity.... However I was pleasently suprised. saw several thousand ducks b/w eden and thorton. also saw a good concentration of snows in or around the same area...
saw ducks milling around in several different areas as well on the way to greenwood. I made this same trip last week twice and saw very few birds.
i guess thats the way it goes

I was on Chotard Wednesday and saw hundreds of ducks, mostly mallards. It must be really cold up north along with a dwindling food supply.

It's just as frustrating when there are no ducks AFTER the season is over!

was driving down old flowood dr. this a.m. and two woodies about spladdered my windshield!!! the car in front of me just about ran off the road to miss them. that would have been a good one to explain to the insurance company. for you delta boys this is almost in downtown jackson.

Yea man I know where your talkin about. You can tell that was proably a real ducky area years ago... you see things like that in the metro area more than u would think. i have seen close to 1000 ducks roost on the river right below the waterworks plant off I-55.

also, on lakeland drive behind the air 2 lan building you can watch the ducks pile in there right at roost time.

next time u fly over jackson check out that big stand of hardwoods and all the flooded timber on the river. quite impressive..

Bigwater, I bet the place you saw the ducks between Eden and Thornton was on the refuge area for Hillside. Going north, was it on your right, in that big curve just before the bayou?

BW -- that was my favorite hunting hole when i was in college....

Hey bigwater I live in Belhaven and each spring hen wood ducks nest in the old hackbeery and wateroak trees around my house and try to make that journey of about a mile to the river. And yes you can go back there and see lots of ducks of all Spp. But it is a dam shame how much trash is back there. looks like a flooded landfill.
