DU & refuges

Memphis, TN, February 9, 2004---Ducks Unlimited (DU) continues to work toward the preservation of recreational hunting as a compatible use of National Wildlife Refuges. The Fund for Animals (Plaintiff) filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Defendant) on March 13, 2003 and continues to seek elimination of hunting opportunities on 39 wildlife refuges located throughout the United States. DU and several other conservation-sportsmen organizations remain steadfast in opposition to the lawsuit. The groups are official "intervenors" in the case and have offered support to the government's case.

In January, the Judge in the case established a briefing schedule said, Anna Seidman, Litigation Counsel for Safari Club International, " The government has delivered the Administrative Record upon which they based their decision to allow and/or expand hunting on the 39 refuges at issue. This group of documents will also be the materials upon which we and the government will base our summary judgment arguments."

Before establishing a briefing schedule, the Judge requested the parties to confer in order to try to settle the matter without resort of further litigation. While these discussions are ongoing, the Judge has required the parties to move forward with briefing the case.

I sure hope we keep the right judges in place....

Yo Benny
Every vote you cast for those liberals is a vote for just that.

When they make you start catching and releasing those beavers instead of trapping you might understand that they want all your rights. Don't worry, You will always be able to bash Christians!

I will have to disagree with you Benny about the 92% who own it. Most of the funds as I understand it that fund the WMA's and Refuges come fromt the Dingle Johnson act. Which is a the extra tax we pay on hunting and fishing equipment . So as I see it, we the sportsman pay for more of the cost than the general non-hunting public.

Boykin...

Dingle-Johnson covers fishing. It's the Pittman-Robertson Act that funds hunting.

Additional wetlands that are added to our National Wildlife Refuges are funded by our federal duck stamp money and from royalties on oil drilling in offshore waters and refuge lands.

Additional wetlands that are added to our state WMA's comes largely from state duck stamp money.

As for the Fund for Animals, PETA, HSUS, the Sierra Club, etc., they have all become arms of the Democrat Party.

AvianQuest,

Your right I got the two mixed up.

But I thought that Chad Manlove from DU said that over 50% of our State duck stamp money goes to DU work in Canada?

Boykin, that brings up another point I'd like to discuss.

I'm a supporter of both DU and DW. But I'm tired of DU doing everything they can to improve everything in the north. I approve of 50% of money going to help breeding ground, but I looked throught the last Du magazine, and saw nothing but talk of northern states. This might be common during off season, when they are all supposed to be up there, but I'm talking about the January edition!

Boykin,

The actual Percentage that goes to Canada is not that high. It's closer to 13% of the states revenue from duck stamp sales that is sent to Canada. Mississippi generated close to $300,000 in duck stamp sales last year. I think MS obligated $40,000 to be sent to Canada. Those dollars were used to protect grassland and wetland complexes in Saskatchewan.

Yes, the breeding grounds of Canada and the northern Great Plains remain DU's #1 conservation priority. However, the Mississippi Alluvial Valley is extremely important as well. DU is trying to help ducks throughout the Mississippi Flyway.

We do a lot of conservation work here in the south......

Fund 3470 2003 Revenues were over $300,000.00, from this amount only $101,781.47 was spent; Ducks Unlimited received the lions share in the amount of $ 95,000.00 in 2003.

That is far greater than 13%.

Ducks Unlimited and their in state partners, receive most of the funds on a yearly basis.

Chad, can you give us a detail income and expenditure list from Fund 3470 “Duck Stamp Fund” since 1998?

Hardin,

The question I answered specifically addressed duck stamp dollars that were sent to Canada. $40,000 out of a total of $300,000 were sent to Canada....

Yes, DU received other funds....$25,000 went to the Gulf Coast Joint Venture for conservation planning activities along the coast....specifically, GIS remote sensing efforts to determine amount of flooded bottomland hardwoods along the gulf coast. Another $30,000 went to the Mississippi Partners Project....private lands work in the Delta. Again, DU does not actually keep these dollars. They are funneled through us and distributed to these specific projects.

I don't know why the other $200,000 was not spent. That's a MDWFP decision.

What I am troubled by is the lack of public accountability for the expenditures from this fund. Why should it be so hard to get this information?

I would like to see additional money spent from this fund to help our state WMA’s directly. For me this is not a DU problem.

Again, Thanks Chad for your valuable input.
