How in the hell can I get rid of this stuff??!!!! What is the best time of year to let the water off to lessen the chance of being runover with it. Also, what can I spray over corn, millet, and sudan that is already coming up (to get rid of any unwanted weeds)???

2,4-D if the corn is not too tall.1.5 pints and 1/2% surfactant if the sesbania(coffeeweed) is under a foot. A quart of 2,4-D if it's taller. I've sprayed about 60 acres with 2,4-D this year. Won't harm the grasses but will control the broadleaf weeds like cocklebur, morning glory, sesbania, etc. Be careful with it. It will drift for miles and hates roses, cotton, soybeans, sunflowers, tomatoes and trees.

Blazer at 1-10 or 1-12 is labeled for rice and beans. Smokes sesbania.

Yea, sprayed with 24D last year and it came right back. But it will not hurt the corn, sudan , or millet correct??? corn is prob no more than 1'- 1' 1/2" tall

According to Delta Digest, direct the spray below the whorl (the top part where leaves are coming out) if corn or sorghum is taller than 8". But read the label on what product you buy.

Sorghum sudangrass is a similar plant so I would follow above advice. I sprayed some of my wild game food sorghum with it and it twisted it up a bit but it grew out of it.

Millet will do fine with it but you might want to spray it before it heads.

If the sesbania you sprayed came back either you used wrong rate or either you got a new flush of seedlings. I sprayed some, pumped the pond and had to spray again after it dried up because new seedlings emerged.

Can you spray atrazine on millet, etc? I know you can spray it on corn.

No, atrazine is not labeled in millet. Also, yes you should keep the 2,4-D away from the corn's whirl (growing point) to be on the safe side.

I would let water off early or really late...not mid or late-summer. Coffeeweed germinates when there is good moisture+high soil temps. That is why you see them along and in water furrows in crop fields. There is good moisture there and they often germinate or have a second/third flush after farmers have made their routine post emerge sprayings. Watch what happens on a good year when ample rain comes and big crops are the norm....coffeeweed in fields. The rains come during high temp days and coffeeweed germinates and sneaks thru crop canopy. You can get good canopy from grass if you let water off early that will "shield" the ground from germinating coffeeweed. Same thing with a really late drawdown...you get passed the time when soil temps are really high, more grass than coffeeweed germinates. Alot of grasses will germ around 50-55 degree soil temps. Most broadleafs germinate at 60 degree or above soil temps. Coffeeweed is probably above 70 degree soil temps. Not a hard fast rule, but that is sort of how plants enter the scenario based on time of year + soil temps.

There are several chemicals that do a fine job on coffeeweed for the above grasses you are trying to grow. Go by your extension office and ask for the info. I can think of at least 3 that will do the job.

I had a 15 acre pond that went dry in March and was slap full of barnyard in May. Headed out and was dead by June. Pond sat idle until about mid July. Right before I left for vacation I noticed a pretty good stand of coffeeweed coming on (hadn't rained or had water on it in several months). While I was gone it started raining. I got back from vacation and it was like looking at the Ardennes Forest.

I ended up bush hogging it about 6-8" high. Coffeeweed didn't come back but the smartweed and more barnyard that was underneath it did.

we had them BAD when our slough would dry up early. finally got a tractor in and bushhogged them down - some were over 16ft tall and very woody stalks (let them go for a year b/f we could get in to clip them) . catch them early before the stalk gets woody....and clean out your radiator often if you run them down or you WILL overheat. we were down to less than 80 total acres of open water from 240 acres, before we knocked them down...and well on our way to being primarily a roost.

Seems that if the water comes off in late July you are better than if it comes off in April/May. All in all it serves a purpose. I do know that the Banvil /24D I sprayed on it when it was 6-8" killed it quick. Like it started wilting while I was still in the field quick.
