I would really really love to say I sat in a chair blind for four days waiting on that Gadwall to swim up to water's edge to get that shot. The reality is that two weeks ago I had to go to Omaha with my wife for a conference, and while she worked I went to the Henry Doorley Zoo to practice. I took pictures for about 4 hours. I wound up with a lot of shot's I'm really excited about, and a lot of them came from their aviary. I'd say it's about three acres under net with plenty of habitat for all types of fowl. There is an elevated boardwalk meandering through it. I happened to look over the side and there amongst all the exotic birds was the Gadwall. There was a pretty large flock of cattle egrets that were all nesting in the trees at eye level with the boardwalk. I was able to get a few neat shots of hatching and feeding babies too.

Being captive animals sort of takes a little of the shine off of getting some good shots for me, but it was a really fun shoot. I'll post a link to a slide show in a separate thread.

congrats. dont be so shy about taking pics in captivity, i used to be but if you start looking at magazines and big time photographers most of their pics come from these types of places. having said that all my pics are wild except some of my deer that are in a high fence area.

I don't mean to burst your bubble because it is a great shot, but it's not a gadwall. Looks like a yellow-billed pintail to me.

Hmm. I've never seen a yellow billed pintail. Maybe so.
