Best brand appliances

Postby fireplug » Fri Feb 10, 2017 12:33 pm

We are in the process of building a new house. Going to be picking appliances soon. What appliances are best that don't break the bank. I haven't had good luck out of Frigidaire or Samsung so they are off my list.

I'm leaning to Kenmore or Maytag. Will be buying fridge, double oven, dishwasher, cooktop and washer / dryer. All electric, no gas.

Need some experiences.

Whirlpool owns Maytag (and KitchenAid and Amana).

While Kenmore is (currently) owned by Sears/K-Mart - they contract out who makes their appliances. I'm not sure who makes their fridges.

Electrolux owns Frigidaire. We currently have a Frigidaire side by side Fridge/Freezer. It's a piece of junk. The water/ice maker quit (bad input valve, I've been too lazy to fix - initially the replacement part was outrageous). All of the shelves/drawers have either cracked or broken. It's only 10 years old. Stuff quit or broke 5 or 6 years ago. But it still cools and freezes. When we replace it, we won't buy another by Frigidaire.

We just given an electric Frigidaire range as a gift. So far so good.

I have no experience with Samsung appliances aside from TVs/etc.

We have the Speed Queen top loader after researching it and two family members having good luck with them. I will try the Speed Queen dryer when that time comes.

Its all junk. Nothing is made like it used to be. We have a Kenmore Elite Side by Side fridge that is three years old that leaks Coolant, I have to recharge it every couple of months. That damn fridge was over $2g. We have a brand new GE over the stove Microwave/fan hood, The Microwave sounds like a jet and the fan sounds like a train, you can hardly hear the TV. None of the stuff has a warranty over a year.
Good luck it all made as cheap as possible.

We've had good success out of Thermador and Kitchenaid.

After having a $1500 Samsung fridge go out on me 1 year after the warranty (year 6), I decided to buy all appliances used from here on out. I can find pristine condition appliances for minimum 50% off, usually more, on craigslist. They might last 20 years. They might crap out in 2 years. If they crap out, I get another used one.

I believe it's cheaper this way, and once they've been in your house for 6 months, they're all used anyways.

THIS (and ditto for electrolux fridge, too)!! fought for an entire year to get someone on the phone in customer service who gave a rip. they were trying to make me pay parts and labor to fix a known issue (that they were in a class action suit over). finally got the right person and they sent another fridge (was really hoping they would just refund cost and get a different brand). they fixed the issue we were having on the newer model, but it is still a loud, clunky hunk-a-junk!

This.
We have the dryer and looking to pull the trigger on top load FULL agitator so we can get CLEAN clothes for a change. I have a Maytag Bravos top load. Crappy at best.
I was told by an appliance repair man to get the Whirlpool dishwasher as he see less calls on them, Happy so far. House came with all Kenmore in kitchen. It was good but as I replace, it's gonna be Whirlpool!

I would have said Kenmore until my fridge and stove both crapped out on year 7.

Well I decided on Maytag based on the need for the wall mount oven microwave combo. They had the least expensive option as the thing basically took up my entire appliance budget alone.

Yeah, I've had the Fridgidaire ice maker / water and shelve break problem on one that was less than 2 years old and I had a Samsung fridge that would not make enough ice to last a day and a Samsung dishwasher that I was about ready to pay someone to come take away before I lost my sanity.

I'll see how these last. If they don't hold up I may try the "buy used" strategy going forward myself.

I try to go as basic as possible on appliances, less to tear up. I swear some of these appliances need a rocket scientist to figure out the buttons and settings.

Update on my Samsung! Finally last week they told me a service rep would be contacting me to come and repair my fridge. I waited all week on the call and never received one. I called them back Friday to be told there is no authorized service in my area and they would be refunding my money. This would be fine if it were not for the extra 180 dollar 3 year service contract I purchased through Best Buy that they refuse to refund. Pretty aggravated at this point.
